    Powderless .22's

It has long been recognized that I'm a man of exceptional thrift. So given a couple of buckets of old ammo they ended up on the bench for dis-assembly / salvage / odd lots for the display drawer. I'm down to a couple of inches of old .22's., as I hate to toss live ammo - put the lead in a vice and push the brass off, lead in the smelt pile...

Anyway, I've a whole series of .22's that are powderless. The internal rim area is coated with a green compound, but no powder in the brass. The base is marked only with a 5 point star.

Probably pretty common, but I'm usually well behind the power curve- any input???

I think they are called Colobri’s. Made by Aquila. I use them on squirrels.

Colibris are indeed made by Aguila and there are two versions. The standard Colibris have one primer and the Super Colibris have two. I don't have any of the one primer version, as they are recommended for revolvers only. I guess this is because of the possibility of sticking a bullet in a rifle barrel. But I do have a couple of boxes of the Supers; mine have the image of a hummingbird on the base (colibri means hummingbird in Spanish). Either type is loaded with a 20 grain lead projectile, which would require a really small boolit mold. I already had to use a magnifying glass to make out the little bird on the supers. I don't know where the star comes from.

If they’re short, they’re BB caps. Stands for bulleted breech. Don’t see those much any more.

I think that they are FedArm, I looked them up- still unclear- they fire with just the priming compound in them? Or have to add powder? Assemble your own, who'd have thunk it?

If they are BB caps, they will fire, about like a BB gun.

There's guys shooting black-powder .22 rimfire competition that would dearly love to have those if they're FedArm kit brass. If you're taking apart Colibris, no great loss. They foul the throat something awful. I still have several boxes, which I would give away if I ever met someone I disliked enough.

Way back when Pontius was still a pilot, I tried BB caps in a revolver. Fouled the chambers to the point LR's wouldn't chamber. They left a ring of deposit around the case mouth.

CCI makes a Quiet 22 that also works well.

They are quite but my Ruger mk4 with a suppressor won't cycle.

Great for new shooters and single shots!

Turns semi-autos into single-shots. Good! Teaches you not to waste ammunition.

My go-to for close-in pests on the porch, however. At ten feet it killed a big boar 'coon last month - (head shot from an Iver Johnson Model 55 that I keep by the door). Good on squirrels on the feeder at about 40 feet range from a Marlin 15Y that the grandkids outgrew (but I didn't). Doesn't foul up either one the way shorts and that Colibri stuff do. Just wish I could FIND some more.....I'm down to my last two boxes.

there's cci quiet (710fps) and cci quiet semi-auto (835fps). for the most part, the semi-auto does cycle in a smith victory, taurus tx-22, ruger sr22. web searches will find some pockets of both types available ... and at a premium price tag. hmm.

Will there ever be Quiet again? Out of stock everywhere. I inquired of CCI and they couldn't (or wouldn't) tell me. I paid an outrageous scalper's price on Gunbroker last night for five more boxes - that's how much I prefer it to anything else for porch pests, (e.g. skunks, opossums, raccoons). A box will last about a year doing nothing but that, if I'm careful.

Well, your Guugle-fu is a whole lot better than mine. Kudos!

    Bronson is in Canada

DEGuns total for 5 boxes with shipping was more than I paid the scalper.

Anacorte really was $2.99 a box but charged $40.00 shipping. Bottom line not much less than I paid that scalper, but I bought 5 more boxes anyway. That leaves 5 boxes in their inventory for someone else.

    Thanks!

People VALUE those things. Don't toss them. They will shoot without powder. I believe they can be used in Flobert 6mm garden guns also. People hunt for ammo for those.
If you can pull the bullets you can sell just the cases to those like me who load and reload 22 rim fire. You can get away with sending them in the mail if the bullets are pulled.

I used to use both BB and CB caps in my 1890 Winchester (1906 model) gallery pump gun. They worked fine. Any non auto loader that will shoot a short should be OK with CB or BB caps.
