Most of the 722s encountered down here seem to be .300 Savage or .222. When I was a kid my dad had a .222 with a 6X Weaver. The last three 721s in .300 I have encountered were all punched out from .300 H&H to .300 Weatherby.

They made 721 in 300H&H most around here are 3006 & few 270. The 222 is number 1 in 722.

Have 2 M722’s in .300 Savage, one scoped and one with Lyman peepsight. Both are great shooters with cast, and of course with jacketed bullets there’s not a dimes worth of difference from .308 Win. These were the plain Jane rifles for $90 when M70’s were $137.50, but they are real steel and walnut rifles. You won’t go wrong with one, IMHO. Of course mine were picked up in bygone years at decent prices - last one was $300.

My buddy has a .338 Win Mag that PO Ackley made and his name is on that barrel as well. He picked up the barreled action at an auction for a song. He has been offered $1000 for it, but wouldn’t sell. Had a local gunsmith stock it.

Neighbor just bought one in 280 Remington, probably the least number of chamberings in the Remington 722. It’s hard to find one that hasn’t been molested in some way.

I'm keen on having one in .222 and one in .244, bu a .280 would be close to that. Of all the times someone has tried to "improve" the .30-06, the .280 is the one that comes the closest to actually doing it. A 721 in .280 would be a good one to have.
