    Need Electrical help

Need to run power to a Gate

Power comes from juncton box In basement

Goes to inside switch to control power to gfi outlet out side

    Gfi outlet to gate

    Inside wire 12/2
outside wire is 12/2 direct bury

I know the wiring is basic. But how do I wire it.

I want to kill power at gate and gfi outlet

    Thanks

You need to turn off the breaker that controls that GFCI outlet. Make sure everyone in your house knows not to turn it back on. In industry, you'd lock it so it cannot be turned on. White wire goes to Silver screw, black wire goes to Brass screw, if you have a green wire, it goes to the green ground terminal. If no green wire, there should be one that's bare copper, and it goes to the green ground terminal. If you have both green and bare, green goes to green ground screw, bare wire to the outlet box. 12/2 wire should only have the bare copper, black & white wires.

To make sure you have the right breaker turned off, you can plug in a radio or vacuum cleaner and turn it on. When the noise stops, you have the correct breaker off.

The cable from the circuit breaker the black is hot, white neutral, green or bare is ground. Run this cable to switch. Hook the black to one terminal of switch. Run the cable to the outdoor GFI, hook the black to other terminal of switch. Connect the matching wires from circuit breaker to cable to GFI. When you flip switch on, this completes circuit to the GFI. Flip it off no power flows.
I assume you will plug the gate into the GFI. This just controls power to the GFI. It won't open and close the gate.
Most places, even with direct bury cable require it be inside conduit.

You must add a new breaker for the GFI - which may not work on a long run. GFI sense inbalance between hot and neutral OR current in the green ground. You could just get GFI breaker and wire direct. Best way.
    Whatever!
