    Savage 219C 22 Hornet

    Hello friends,

I am close to closing a deal on a Savage 219C in 22 Hornet. I want to buy a mold for it. I don't know the twist rate yet, it is a long distance purchase. I have seen it listed as 1-14" and 1-16".

I want to start with the Lee 55 gr mold. Have any of you guys had any luck with it? I have searched the forum for this rifle and I have made a lot of notes for load testing (this site is a wealth of information but we all know that. That's why we love it.)

All of the previous experiences seem to revolve around the twist rate. Any insight you guys can provide will be greatly appreciated.

I use the NOE 45 grain WFN in my 219, works grea, but I only push it slow for squirrel loads.

I shoot the Bator bullet Midsouth used to sell, I don't think it's available anymore, in a Stevens 325 bolt gun which likely has the same twist. It shoots well too, despite being 55 grains, it's actually shorter than the 225438

A while back (1965-1968) I had a Savage 219 in 22 Hornet. I used a single cavity Lyman 225415 with good success. The rifle had a 3/4" Weaver B6 scope in a side mount. I could get 1 1/2 groups with it and Hercules 2400 or IMR 4227. I was using very hard bullets, my uncle brought me Babbitt flashing from the Bethlehem steel, filled his lunch box with it, that I used to cast, probably 90% tin. What does a teen-age kid without a mentor know.

I’ve had several 219s in Hornet, in fact I have one like new right now. It came from family that had HWD store. I think this rifle was a return from years ago. It’s got problems and I haven’t been into it yet. Anyway I have a old Ideal FN mold that does well in the old Savages of all models. I have 3 spitzer molds for 224 and never did squat with any of them. Maybe trying to push them to fast?
