Really, are you talking 100, 200, 330, 500, 750 yards, what is semi long distance? I see a lot of semi trailers are 53' long.

I have shot them out to 550 yards from a 325 Stevens bolt gun.

Would also be of benefit to know what type action... I do not expect our rattlly old 1876 45-60 to compete well at 300 yards against our Roller in 45-70.

Lets say 300 yards, I guess to a lot of you that's not long distance in any way.
Guns used would be a pump action 30-06 and Winchester 94 30-30

I don't have a long range but 30-06 with a 311299 I have hit a 2' target at just about 400 yards with a 700bdl standing up, have no idea what it can do sitting down with gun in holder. 30-30 is 100-150 yard gun for me. I'm no nra high power or benchrest shooter. I just go out back and shoot across the field.

my son has killed a doe at 173 yards(laser range finder) with a165gr ranch dog with a 30-40 krag going 1930fps. i killed a doe with same rifle/boolit at 140-150yards. they were long shots. we have killed 12 - 13 deer with the krag/rd, but usually we kill deer at under 50 yards.

i have killed several deer with my 444 marlin and 275gr ranch dog going about 1800-2000fps(different powder loads) but again, the deer were 50 yards and under.

For 'group' or target shooting at 200 yards and beyond, I find the flat nose bullets in the 30-30, 35 Rem, others are just as accurate as the more streamlined bullets of a similar weight on a CALM DAY. Groups begin to widen significantly as the wind get stronger. There is more drop of course, but the real issue is the wind at longer ranges. Basic accuracy is good with flat nose bullets, but the wind can be an issue when things get longer - very noticeable at 200 yards and beyond. I can hold a 2" vertical and 2" horizontal at 200 yards with my 32 Special. When the wind starts to puff, vertical is still 2" but horizontal will start to widen, 3", 6", cannot hold steady levels. Wind is the problem going long, pointy bullets work better in the wind. I normally don't hunt with boolits.

What MostlyLeverGuns said is what I've found. For hunting, which is where the FN bullets of the RD type are best, I find 200 yards to be about the max range for me with just about any 30/31/8mm cartridge. For longer range shooting I prefer a RN or semi-spitzer shaped bullet.

To me with rifles using rifle cartridges 200 yards falls within the "short range" category. I consider out to 300 yards as "short range", 300 to 600 yards as "medium range" and past 600 yards as long range. Just my own personal meanings. I do do quite a bit of cast and jacketed bullet shooting at 500 and 600 yards on 4, 10 and 12" steel gongs. At 1000 - 1500 yards I most often use a 24" steel gong with an impact light on it but that is mostly with jacketed bullets. Though i do occasionally sling some lead at it with my TDs.......

I use the NOE clone of the 310-165hp and out of a 1/12 twist 308 I shoot it out to 300 with around a 4-5” group at 300. At 200 it holds 2” and at 100 it’s a one hole shooter

I use Varget, right at 38 grn it gives me about 2350fps

I fiddled around for awhile with four or five Marlin leveraction’s In 444 shooting the Ranch Dog 432-265GC bullet . I was trying to get a decent load to shoot in the hunter rifle class in CBA matches . While I was satisfied with the 100 yard targets my 200 yard left me wanting better . I first used my higher octane hunting loads and they actually did the best . But I tried to throttle it back some and didn’t have the greatest of luck and lost intrest .

When John Kort was still with us and holding his Leveraction Jubilee Shoots I went to Ridgeway PA and shot with them one year . Closest shots were 200 meters furthest were 500 meters . I used a different peep sighted lever action rifle for each yardage shooting FN cast bullets . By no means did I hit the all but I plunked enough to put a snails on my face . The rifle I shot at 500 meters was a circa 1952 Marlin 336SC in 35 REM shooting the RCBS 35-200GC bullet going at about 1500 FPS . I think I hit four of the ten silhouettes at 500 meters with most of the credit going to John Kort who was spotting for me .
