Picked this up as a project to refesh or refinish but I seem to have lost interest in bolt actions lately. It is a Remington Model 788 in the fairly uncommon .30-30 Winchester. Rifle shows quite a bit of “patina” and the stock looks to have been poorly refinished at one time. Some time with a Big 5 pad, oil, paint stripper and Tru-oil will do wonders for this rifle.
Other than the plug screws for the scope mount holes, the rifle looks to be complete, even with the oft missing rear sight. Has one properly marked mag. (PO name on it) Bore is very good. Bolt handle does not look to have been rewelded (I took it apart and looked inside, which I am told is where the repair takes place). The bolt does show a lot of finish wear.
I have not shot this rifle (all the other 788’s I have had have been boringly accurate) but I did pop off a few primed cases to make sure the rifle would go bang. It does seem to have an issue with extraction, sometime it will extract the round and sometimes it won‘t. Ejects fine when it does extract. Will probably work better with a good cleaning. I removed the butt plate to try to see if the stock was walnut and found a spare extractor in a hole under the plate. I haven’t made and effort to swap it out.
This is another one of those rifles where the parts are worth more than the whole. (A much nicer .30-30 bolt sold on that auction site for $485!!). I would like $375 for this rife plus shipping/insurance cost. Must ship to an FFL and I am a private citizen who will include my ID. Payment by Postal Money Order or Cash. No shipping to CA or where prohibited.
