    Casting thermometer, electronic

Let me begin by saying I know nothing about these. I have a Cen-Tech 92242 Digital Thermometer with K-type probe. This was a Harbor Freight special years ago, some of you may remember or even have bought one.

I stopped using it years ago when it stopped giving me a useful screen - I have one large line on the left side of the screen and not much changes, except when it turn it on it flashes a very large number - like 1587 when I have the probe in the air.

I just put a new battery in it to get this screen.

My question is, is the thermometer trash or is it the probe? Is there a test to tell the difference? I have never replaced the probe.

I am asking because I want to start annealing with sand and need a way to measure the temp, for obvious reasons.

Try a new probe. K-type probes are inexpensive, at least, the wire ones are.

From my limited experience I would suspect the probe if faulty.

I don't recall the Harbor Freight thermometer, I do have a Harbor Freight digital multimeter that has a temp probe.
I use it for checking my lead temps as well as other temps. Being a multimeter it gets used troubleshooting electrical issues in my house and on the old motorcycles I like to tinker on.
I got it 4 or 5 years ago with a coupon for around $27. I think they now sell for around $35.
I have a PID for my casting pot. The temps between the to are negligible. The Meter changes temps faster than the PID but once stable they read the same.
I like the versatility of the multimeter. for a similar price as some temp probes it does so much more.
