Savage NRA Match Rifle: day 2 at the range

After a year of owning this rifle I finally got to enjoy some quality range time with it. I think this is going to be my new favorite 22 rifle. It is more accurate than I can hold. Quiet and just plain relaxing to shoot.
Some one in days gone by has replaced the front sight with a gold bead type that is too tall. With the rear Lyman sight all the way down it's still shooting 4 inches high at 25 yards. Or I am going to have to learn to shoot at 100 yards.

This rifle was a grungy mess when I brought it home. Cleaning all the metal parts inside and out, removing the rear sight and fixing it, it had been dropped and was bent, then refinishing the stock and the rifle is well balanced in the hand and very pleasant to look at.

More range time is planned real soon.

Front sight too tall would make the impact point too low, not too high.

Tazman you are correct and it shoots too low, I just spend too much time going backwards through life.

Yep or get a shorter front sight. If Google is right it has a 25 inch barrel, rear sight mounted on receiver so plenty of sight radius to help out with the opens.

The rear sight has plenty of elevation so that should take care of the problem.
I am trying to catch-up for 20 years of no shooting. I had thought it would all come back, but it seems I have a lot to relearn.

Another hot, muggy Minnesota morning at the range. I brought my big boy camera this time as I didn't like the cell phone pictures. I made a guess and by golly sight adjustment before leaving the house and almost got it right. The group on the left is the first 5, then a windage adjustment and the results are the group to the left. Now it's time to concentrate on sight alignment, breathing and trigger squeeze. Subsequent groups show it will put 5 shots in a single hole, if I can hold it.

The Lyman rear sight is tiny and sort of delicate, but accurate.

The more I shoot it the more I like it. Even more fun than the new CZ and Savage .22's.

The front rest is a homemade affair that dates to 1950 and a group of benchrest shooters in Iowa Falls, Ia.

Nothing better than an accurate gun and it looks like you have a keeper. You will enjoy the gun.

I, for one, enjoy shooting more than reloading. So the .22 is a wonderfully fun cartridge for me. The only downside being sweeping up brass because my range is off the back porch. I always keep about 20k rounds in stock. I even shoot the really bad stuff like Remington Thunderbolt. The occasional misfire is good training to see if I flinch at the shot...LOL.

BTW, if you have not shot for a long time it takes a while to get back into form. One thing is to "stay in the shot". That means not to move at all once the shot breaks. I see many shooters lift their heads as the shot breaks.
