Raccoon Hunting With a Iver Jonson 32

A month or so back I bought a couple of old pistols at a farm auction
It was a group of guns at the end that no one had bid on ,$20 for 3 old revolvers and 2 H&R single shot rifles
After no one bid on the lot , I said $20 and no one else bid

One of the revolvers was a Iver Jonson break top 32 S&W short
They gave me a box of Bullets , powder , brass , ammo and dies for the guns
All the powder was old and the cans were open , so I spreaded it in the garden

I had some 80 gr cast bullets , so I loaded up some of the 32 S&W short
The revolver was tight , but in need of a good cleaning
But I still loaded what was listed as about starting load ,a Black Powder safe load

We started Crop Damage raccoon trapping July 1
I ran the traps this morning
The field corn is shoulder high , but no ears

So we have the traps along the creek and on the side of the woods
60 Dog Proof traps and 12 snares
The catch was 6 adult raccoons and 3 young of the year in the traps
    Nothing in the snares

I wanted to try the 32 revolver out
I shot them through the chest and the bullet exited the raccoon
I figure that was the first time in a long time that the revolver had been shot
So I was not worried about the eagles getting any lead

So I gave the 3 young of the year to a guy that wanted some to eat
The 6 adult Raccoon were put out next to the lane and the eagles were there with in 20 min
They each made several trips , I bet to feed the young ones in the nest

I will set some snares for coyote using raccoon for bait
Coyotes , eagles and buzzards clean up the raccoon
So non of the dead raccoon will go to waste

    Thanks
    John

I got a similar little Iver Johnson top break a few years ago. Starting load in the Lyman manual was 1.1 grains of Bullseye and I can assure you that a Lyman 55 will throw a charge that small with monotonous accuracy.

I like the little .32s but I haven't shot that one sine then.

I have an Iver Johnson that is black powder rated. They are pretty cool guns. I had no idea that they used a transfer bar 100 years ago.

I haven’t tried smokeless in it. It is missing a front sight so I need to add that. It shoots about 3’ high at 10 yds without the sight. Yes, that is feet.

It would be fun to watch the eagles feed.

There were Iver Johnson ads in magazines with the slogan "hammer the hammer " with an accompanying illustration. It may have been the company slogan.

Great $20 pick up. The 32 anythings are underrated by too many.

I have an old young American 32. I bought some place powder equivalent loads and tried it out the summer before last. It taught me to wear eye protection. I want at the time and had a couple pieces of primer imbedded into my check just below my eye. One more half inch and I’m sure I would have lost my sight. The firing pin built into the hammer is to long and pierced my primers. I think I placed an old post with pics the summer before load there. Be careful not to do what I did.
