    221 Falcon

Multi step process forming 221 Falcon brass. First round failed miserably with major neck splits using W231 and cornmeal, but I think the brass was old and had many firings. Cornmeal left the crusty residue inside the necks. Tried again with other brass and included an annealing step.

I made some step bushings on the lathe to neck down the 30-30 in two steps, then final sized with the 221 Falcon die. Loaded at the starting load IMR 4064 and fire formed.

Now that is a seriously short neck.

Just enough to hold those 55gr Vmax’s

Curious what my trim length should be. Need to round up some cerrosafe and make chamber cast.

    50 yd fireforming looks promising!
Need to get better glass on the Contender Super14 barrel.
Should get around 3000fps in this critter.

Sort of a .219 Zipper Improved Improved? 3000 FPS should be doable since your case capacity is approaching 22-250. V-max are great bullets. That is the shortest neck I’ve seen I think; but hey, if it works it works.

Using those cases, I think I would trim just enough to square up the necks, not to an arbitrary number.

If you do a chamber cast and find you have more room, maybe try making cases from longer .38-55 cases from Starline.

Good luck with it, it seems to shoot well.

Not sure on case life. I intend to do minimal sizing with it being for a TC Contender. I do have a home built auto annealer to help out.

Testing with my home turned Bellm style headspace dial indicator, I found a case length based on some long cases and trimmed down suit the chamber. The 50 I made are under the length. Like you said, trim to just square and deburr.

I know for the next round of forming, some new Starline will be in order. Need some more for my 7-30 Waters as well.
