The wife and I went trout fishing yesterday

I love the fight of these guys, pound for pound the ultimate fighter, a 22 incher just tears it up clearing water by 3 feet sometimes, will make 2 or 3 20 yard runs stripping line like you hooked Jaws! We kept 9 in the live wells

That must have been a great day!!!! Congrats. We moved to Tennessee about three years ago. And you can't or shouldn't eat the fish from around here. Stinks. There are some spots that have hatchery fish and they are good to go, but pan fish and cats are out of the question. Knoxville, Tn by the way.

The further east I go the smaller the fish I eat, and that includes in this state. I'm approximately 50 miles from the headwaters of the Missouri, Canyon Ferry is 35k acres of damned up Missouri and hopefully very clean compared to the water down stream. We have approx 100 miles of shoreline and some farming but nothing like eastern Montana. I'm sure a guy eats plenty of fertilizer and insecticides from farm run off the further towards North Dakota boarder you go. I've eaten a ton of northern(probably literally) from Trenton, Garrison and a few other lakes and ponds over there, they just taste better here!

Edit; I'll bet that dark fat under the skin is full of herbicide too, probably a 2-4d /Roundup butter right there!!!!! yum yum yuk yuk yuk

I spent the weekend fishing Fort Peck. Some say you can render down the big ones there and make a thermometer.

I got pictures of a friend from about 3 weeks ago with some big walleye and northern from FT Peck. I've got a nephew that fishes it a lot too, I grew up in Sidney on a farm about 1/4 mile from the Yellowstone river, we ran trot lines in it.

that looks like canyon ferry... i am originally from Montana, Helena area near the silo's, then livingston area...... we just dont get trout like that here.... yes we get steelhead, but they are few and far.. Dolly varden, and smaller cutthroats are the so so mainstay. salmon is king around here.. and they are just seasonal.

Markopolo we usually go there for walleye, but if they aren't biting I get bored and it's rainbow time, they're always good for some excitement. I can't hardly stand to vertical jig, I pitch crankbaits toward shore and when I get bored we troll bottom bouncers and a crawler harness. The older we get the more we enjoy just fishing different lakes in Montana, we got what 3-4k choices, I'll never get to fish them all! We had/have friends that lived right at the Silos, Bonnie and Greg Elliot.

i been here in alaska for about 25 years, and then livingston for 10 years before that, so my old memory for names is pretty shot... townsend is a small place though...

one thing I do remember though, is that those canyon ferry fish had beautiful pink flesh... and they were yummy!!!!

They are pretty red-orange meat right now and firm, prime eating. It has been raining since Monday evening, started down pouring while the wife and I were putting the boat cover on, driving me nuts that's why I'm on here so much right now.

I think I'll always remember an incident I saw as a kid.

We were canoe floating down the river (we'd drop in at Gold Bar and pull out at Monroe, so it's the Skykomish River in WA state) and would usualy pick up some fresh water mussel shells for one of us who crafted. We'd drop the mussel meat into the river. One day we were doing this and a crawdad came out and was eating all they could grab.

Suddenly, BOOM and there were just Crawdad pieces in the water, and not much of them; A Rainbow Trout had decided that Crawdad sounded GOOD for lunch!

    Pretty aggressive

I need to get back to fishing, you folks have it great there, sounds like!
