My range at the house too is far from an AC outlet and the tree canopy makes it too dark for natural light to work my Chrony. Is there a solution for using a 12 volt light source? Car battery? Thanks

I haven't had this problem, but here is one idea. Build a support to hold a few of these inexpensive, battery powered LED lights.

did you try taking the defuser off?
For indoor use on my skyscreens I use a cheap Harbor Freight LCD light placed on top of the skyscreen diffuser. They can be taped but I've found a thick rubber band will hold them on. The LCD lights even give enough light to chronograph pellets. Here's a picture.
