Is there an official name for alloy Lyman #2 cut in half...

    ... with pure lead?

My supply of scrap pure lead is getting low. I have some Lyman #2 that casts great, but is pretty "rich" stuff for fun shooting (90%Pb, 5%Sn, and 5% Sb foundry metal). I cut this 50:50 with pure lead to get 1/2 of Lyman #2. Heck, I could cut that in half and still have plenty of Sn to cast well. Just wondering if #2 cut in half is a named traditional alloy???

It definitely SHOULD be as Hickory said!

But seriously I believe the 95, 2.5, 2.5 matches electrotype.

E H Harrison in Cast Bullets says electrotype is 3-2.5-94.5 or for those that prefer it the other way, 94.5-2.5-3.

I figured since there is a Lyman #2 that there was already a Lyman#1. Cast'n Lead sounds good 'nuf for me.

Glen Fryxell reports it at 94-3-3.

Alloy calculator stickied on this site reports it at 95-2.5-2.5

For handgun stuff below 900-ish fps, I put just enough WW or other goodies in the pot for it to fill the mold right, and cast well.
That has worked well so far.

Stay at, below, or close to the data listed for similar factory Lead swaged bullets, and you'll be good.

I used an alloy calculator to try for some BHN 10 but with less tin than 20/1. Came up with 8 pounds pure, 2 pounds WW and 4 oz. of pewter. The idea being to get obturation with a 170 gr. boolit in my .357. Using 95/2.5/2.5 over 4 gr. Titegroup gave me some leading just ahead of the forcing cone.

I guess I could try upping the pressure with some AA #7 to see if that "Lyman #1" alloy would seal in my model 27. She has cylinder throats that are maybe a touch over .357" so her geometry is pretty tight. She shoots hbwc like gang busters but then it is like shooting a pellet pistol.

How close to COWW is Lyman #2? In almost all of the straight walled pistol calibers it's awfully hard to beat 50/50+2% so maybe you're getting close with half Lyman #2 and half pure lead?

50/50+2% is THE magic number for Ruger rifling, that alloy and soft lube take to the Ruger barrels like a duck to water.
Got a .22 .30 .32 .357 .38 .40 .41 .44 .45 .480 or .500 S&W cylinder that needs throats honed? 9mm, 10mm/40S&W, 45 ACP pistol barrel that won't "plunk" your handloads? 480 Ruger or 475 Linebaugh cylinder that needs the "step" reamed to 6° 30min chamfer? I think there are some problems with that table.

The 1:1 lead/Lino entry does not total 100 percent, should be 6 percent antimony. That would make it the same as the line above it.

Wheel Weights or at least the clip on kind are harder than BHN 9

My big lot of range scrap tests at BHN 8.2. Can't say how much tin it has but it casts fine. 50/50 range scrap and COWW tests at BHN 11.0 so it pretty much like the diluted #2 or electrotype or Lyman #1 . It took a pretty good dose of Mono to boost the range scrap to BHN 15, 4:1 Range Scrap to Mono is like #2 and is pretty much the same as 40:1 COWW to Pewter or lead free solder.

8 lbs of range scrap and 2lbs. Monotype (mine) would have about 2.5% tin and over 6% antimony. <><. Which qualifies I guess. It needs that extra hardness for rifle application. But wouldn’t the Lyman number one work as well too with over 4% antimony and quenched?
