Does the "point" need to be coated?

Just a hypothetical. I'm going to be doing the "tumble" method to coat my boolits. But if you were spraying to coat, would there be any reason why you couldn't rest them on their noses(for a rnfp, swc, etc) and never bother to coat the nose? As long as the base and sides are coated, that's all that really matters, right? Am I missing something?

I think your on the right track. Just the bearing surfaces need a lube.

I set the large meplat 300 gun Plain base .452” CB’s nose down when I spray coat and then also bake in this position. I get better shooting results with this coating orientation than base down. I shoot these in a 450 Bushmaster rifle at just over 1800fps with excellent results.

It makes sense that if it doesn't touch the barrel, the coating wouldn't be doing anything. The commercial vendors of HiTek coated cast sell evenly coated slugs because they look better, but if the unused lube grooves on mine look spotty, I let it go because it's just cosmetic. The target and the barrel won't care, so I shouldn't, either.

As noted, no. The base doesn't even really need coating, just what contacts the barrel.
