The Leupold 2.5x20 is about the smallest, lightest 1" scope out there, very very tough. I have a couple on my 45-70 and 444 for steep timber. A 1-4 or 1.5-5 would be my next picks, all 1" scopes, short, light and plenty for 357 ranges (under 250 yards on deer-size game - yeah that's long for a 357). There are some used 2.5x20's around, most of the fixed power 2.5's hold up to 357 recoil. I've had good luck with Simmons and have a alloy Weaver 2.5 that works well. I do have a Burris Fullfield 4.5-14 that I use for accuracy testing during load development, but then the light scope goes on if I going to carry or hunt with the rifle.

I'll second the 2.5 Leupold suggestion. I have one on my 1894 carbine in 44 mag and it is all that gun needs. The only thing that would improve it is if it had the capacity for straight 1x power as well. I've been tempted to pull it off and drop it on my 45/70 but it is such a neat trim combo I can't do it, and I'll have to wait for another to come my way.
    "Is all this REALLY necessary?"
