GT Bullets 175gr SIL HP

Has anyone had any experiences with these bullets?

I ave used GT Bullets with great success in 44 mag and 45 LC but have not experimented with them in rifle.

I planned on testing in my Henry SS in 30-30

Planned on trying 18 grs of Imr 4198 as a baseline test

I'm still about halfway into testing my first batch of GT bullets (250 each of 145 gr and 165 gr LHP for the .357 Rossi R92). Oddly enough I only learned about GT bullets a few weeks ago and ordered the next day. All I can say is - wow!

Now I feel really good about the prospect of having the same results with the GT offerings in 44 mag (also for a Rossi R92).

Thats definitely good to hear. I was also surprised by how well the 44 and 45 variants did. I have not shot on game yet but I think their wide HP will work wonders

regarding the 30 cal 175gr SIL HP.
GT's description says "This bullet is based on the RCBS SIL (silhouette) bullets that are for long range accuracy. "
I suspect GT bullets is using the MP 30 Sil mold. I have that MP mold, but without HP option. It is a very good cast boolit design with tapered nose, so you can easily set the COAL so the boolit engages the lands. I use it in a 30-06 bolt gun, but it should be a good one for 30-30 too. I would recommend finding out the size of your barrel's groove diameter, because some makers use oversized barrels for 30-30, I'm not sure if Henry does too?

Thanks for the reply. I haven't had a chance to slug the barrel yet. Im going to make it over to a friends house to get a confirmation.

I have been having good success with .310 CB's so far

I ordered the test bullets in .310 with an option for .311 also if slugging determines it is needed.

Was able to get out today for some testing of the GT 175gr SIL Hollow Point with gas check lead bullet .310 in my Henry SS 30-30

I went with 18Gr of IMR 4198 with a light crimp to start. OAL 2.65

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.

This was 5 shots at 75 yards front and back sandbag rested with skinner peeps.



That 5th round was a called flyer, but the group size was still measured with it included.

I have set up a few more test groups with:

18gr crimped
18gr no crimp
19gr crimped
19.gr no crimp

I will be running the above loads over the Lab Radar for velocity data

I've got the same bullet, although I have not shot it out of a good rifle yet, only one with a problem. I'd take that accuracy! That should be a heck of a hunting load.

Thanks, Im still early in the testing but it looks promising. What velocity range should I be shooting for, for good expansion?

I have used their .459 in 45-70 and 44's in my 44 mag but those bullets are PB with a huge HP so they open up really easily.

These bullets have the HP but really small

I would ask GT bullets, it looks like they have been hunting with it. With that alloy, even a solid should show expansion around 1600-1700 fps. I would think anything in that 1600-2000 fps range should be fine.

I just picked up today the same Henry single shot in 30-30 so I'm interested in this thread. I like GT's use of a little softer alloys than a lot of the others. With 2-2-96 for handguns and 3-3-94 for rifle these are a refreshing departure from the 20-22 brinnel that most use. Really hard is fine if you need it, but for most of my shooting the soft stuff works better.

You wont be disappointed in the Henry. For me anyway its turned out to be a shooter. I agree on the GT bullets, that's why I like them. They really open up on game being a bit softer.

I was able to get out again for some additional testing with the GT 175 gr SIL HP. I had the lab radar so I got to see what kind of velocities I was working with

My four loads were:

Imr 4198 18 grs no crimp - 1553 fps
Imr 4198 18 grs crimp - 1554 fps
" " 19 grs No Crimp - 1649 fps
" " 19 grs Crimp - 1655 fps

With the Henry SS 30-30




Its a no brainer for the crimp vs no crimp. The real stand out was the 19 gr load. That was only a sample of one group but it looks promising



Back to the loading bench. I will probably go with 19 and 19.5 to see where the grouping takes me. Ill be going with 5 shot groups to see if it will hold up shot to shot vs just a fluke 3 shot group.
