    Here we go again.

A bit over 2 weeks ago my Cindy went back in for surgery.
In the OR for 5 hours. In total, 64 staples. They fused 3 joints with screws. L1-l2, one above that, and one below.
She spent 5 days in the hospital and came home.

No major problems until this last tuesday.

I came in to check on her mid afternoon to find her teeth chattering, running a 102 fever, and her head was in cloud cuckoo land. Very few straight answers.

Turned off the AC, made her a hot tea with sugar and honey. Left her sleeping.
Went and talked to St Peggy. She suggested I call our daughter. (my step-daughter)
She is an LPN, took one look and called a non emergancy ambulance.

She had a raging urinary tract infection. One of the screws they put in her back was badly infected.
Fever comes and goes, they have her on iv antibiotics.

The problem is she is not snapping out of it. She told my daughter she saw a bobcat in the corner of her hospital room.
And she was convinced the nurses were all angry with her.

If I had not got her back to the hospital I think I would have lost her.

Surgeon pulled the staples for the bad screw, opened it up, cleaned it out, put in a drain and closed it back up.

    Obviously I am worried.

We did not say anything about the big surgery. Cindy asked me not to, I think she felt like she had used up all the grace she had coming.

Doctors are saying when she is released she needs to go to a rehab facility as they want to keep her on IV antibiotics for 6 weeks.

So I am looking forward at almost 2 months without my rock.
This is going to be hard.

And frankly I am afraid there is more going on that they are not finding.
The last 2 days she has had no control of her bowels and bad diarrhea, no appetite, and vomiting.

    All prayers very much appreciated.

the antibiotics will will cause those symptoms and shes on a very heavy dose. do not let them discontinue the antibiotics until a bone sample shows clear, they did that to my mom and it killed her. hopefully they let you in to visit as needed for both of your sakes.

In older people UTI's can cause delirium. With all she's been through recently it is reasonable to think it is the cause of her hallucinations, unless they have her on a high a dose of pain medication, which would also cause the vomiting. The vomiting can be controlled with Zofran (ondansetron). The heavy antibiotics they are treating her with will cause the diarrhea. Rehab is two fold it allows her to get the medical attention she needs after she is stabilized as well works at getting her stronger. Be advised elderly patients metabolism medication differently. Watch for signs of overdose or reverse effects. I would like to advise you to take charge of her care as Dr's, Hopsitals & Nursing Homes aren't always attentive to a patients treatment. Ask a lot of questions and if things don't change push for a change in the treatment methods. I would advise you to keep your stepdaughter well advised and follow her lead let her be the patient advocate for your wife.

And remember that grace is God's giving unmerited favor - unmerited means we didn't earn it nor did we do anything to deserve it. He simply gives grace. You can't 'use up' an infinite God's unmerited favor! We are too puny and ephemeral to accomplish that.

I was glad to read that she was doing well enough to have the surgery - and will be praying for her recovery. Lean on your daughter's professionalism, but you may need to remind her to be professional at times - this is her mother after all.

    Thanks brothers!

I do still think there is something not being addressed, but it is hard to pin down. Cindy does tend to be very sensitive to some things. Including Latex and sulfa based drugs.

The good news, she slept better last night, was more herself this morning. Still one foot in cloud cuckoo land, but better.
I am seeing my daughter grow up as she is dealing with all this. Which is also good. Her name is Katie, and she is for the most part a very good loving person.
She has learned a few bad habits from her biological dad, manipulation being the worst.

As for me, well the prayers must be working as I am much calmer and accepting this morning. What will be, will be. The Lord is still in control, and is handling my problems. I just need to remember to relax and let him. Hard habit to break after 60+ years.

For all of you my brothers who have prayed for me and Cindy. May the Lord of Light bless and keep you. May he rain abundance down upon you.
May he repay you what you have given to me ten fold. God Bless you and from the bottom of my heart, thank you.
