300 gr 44 mag a2400 powder load advice

Hey folks
I am looking through load data and having a hard time finding much for a 300 gr cast with 2400 powder. I'm looking for a warm load for my rossi carbine.
I hear people saying use start xtp load data.
The bullet I'm using is very similar to the lee 310 gr its gas checked and powder coated. The bullet has 3 crimp grooves and I can load it to 1.610" and 1.656"
I know h110 is probably a better choice of powder however getting powder and mag primers is somewhat difficult at the moment and I really dont need top tier loads.

The Lee 300 gr bullet and 16 grains of 2400 works well in my Ruger SBH revolvers. 2400 is acceptable for a greater pressure/velocity range than W296/H110. The ball powder isn't recommended for other than maximum loads.

Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook lists 15.0 - 16.6 gr. of 2400 for the Lee 310 gr. bullet. Velocities are 949 - 1023 fps from a 4" bbl. OAL 1.71"

Is that velocity through a rifle barrel or revolver?

Quickload predicts 1400 fps from a 20" barrel with 16 gr 2400. Note that oldsalt's reference was from a 4" barrel.

Ok thanks, that is plenty warm.
My confusion is in my lyman load book it has a 300gr linotype bullet with a max of 15.7gr and a 300gr jacketed with a start of 15.7 gr
Most of the data I have found for a jacketed 300 gr it goes to 17.5 or 18 as max
Seems it is the opposite of what many believe that cast will generally generate less pressure.
Hodgdon shows higher charges with less pressure for a 325gr cast as compared to a 300gr jacketed.
Could it be that it's because lyman used a linotype bullet in their testing?

Ya they would for those who have powder readily available.
Where I'm at you use what you can get. Our local shop has no powder and the shop in the next town over 20 min away is closed because of covid and charges $50 to ship dangerous goods.
I have 4 pounds of 2400 on hand so I figured I could use what I have. Only looking for 1350 to 1400 fps from my 20" barrel.

16 grains of 2400 should be both safe and easily get you to 1400 fps in a 20 inch barrel.

Sixteen grains of 2400 would be a good place to start. Work up ladder loads by 1/2 grain increments. Compare target groups. Don't worry about fps. My Marlin 1894 does it's best with 18 grains of 2400 and the 300 grain RCBS SWC.

Lab Radar used for all data. Bullet is RCBS 300 grain SWC, hollow pointed by Eric.

17.0 grains of 2400 gave an average of 1521 fps for five shots

17.5 grains of 2400 gave an average of 1545 fps for five shots

18.0 grains of 2400 gave an average of 1581.28 fps for five shots.

This is the bullet I have. No gas check so will probably start with the Lyman 15.7gr and see what happens.

(Also think a lot of the case will be used up as the grimp groove is quite near the nose.

Do you have a chronograph? If so, start with 10 gr. of Blue Dot and work down to your subsonic velocity.

Hi BM, I'm certainly not going to argue with your load, but when I did this in 357Mag (rifle) my accuracy deteriorated significantly before gettting to subsonic velocities. OP, I might try Unique first ?
