how noisy is 44-40 at 1200fps?

folks just as a matter of interest whats the blast like from 44-40 loads in a modern 92 action at the olden day speeds? Say whatever pistol powders get 1100-1200fps with 200 grain( cast and also jacketed). Wondering how it would rate alongside factory 30-30 in a 94 and 357 carbine factory ammo?

Considerably less than either of those cartridges. I'm shooting either 8 grs. of Unique or the same charge of SR-7625 out of a '73 Win. clone and report is mild.

thankyou sharps4590, I wasnt sure. I went to a cowboy action shoot to observe a few but they were running much lighter loads than what I was after.

Your stated velocities are right within the transonic range. A little below the speed of sound and you get a pop, a little above and you get a crack. Big difference in sound for a small change in velocity. Pretty interesting when you have a load with an ES right on top of the speed of sound and one round cracks and another pops. And then the temperature changes and they all pop or all crack.

First of all, muzzle "blast" is entirely dependent on the volume of gas and the velocity of the gas on exit from the muzzle. Also as mentioned if the bullet is trans-sonic on muzzle exit the "crack" will add to the "blast". Amount of powder used, chamber pressure, time pressure curve and length of the barrel all effect the velocity and volume of the gas on muzzle exit.

Out of my M92 with 20" barrel 44-40 I shoot a 200 gr cast at 1180 fps or a 230 gr bullet at 1050 fps with Bullseye or 700X powder. The muzzle "blast" of either load is considerably less than my 30-30 loads of 178 gr 311401 loads or factory loads out of my M94 Carbine with 20" barrel. Still, I do not suggest either be fired w/o proper hearing protection...….

And a big difference in gunpowder. Fast pistol powder is pretty quiet from a rifle. Something like RE7 is louder. And real black powder is really loud, loaded like they're supposed to be. All at the same velocity.

What Larry said. My 20" 44-40 is quieter than my 22" 30-30 or my 20" 38-55 by a bit.

Out of my 92 src I'm averaging 1225 fps using 8.3grs of unique with an arsenal 432-210. 210 grain sized to. 428" and it's not loud.

Hey Mick, FWIW, I shoot an 18" 45acp Contender Carbine. With HS7 and a 255gr bolit I average 1075fps. In the woods i can fire 2 shots off and my ears dont ring. Made me happy i dont hafta wear ear plugs when on the stand. Todd/3leg

There were folks shooting center fire rifles in between us. I switched to my 1873 in 44WCF stuffed with Swiss 2F. At the first shot the young couple freaked out! They heard this BOOM! then saw smoke. They just knew someone's rifle just exploded. I am still laughing about it.

That's funny! I do like seeing the reaction people have to seeing a BP cartridge rifle fire for the first time. Usually it is "How come your gun sounds so different from everybody else's?".

I shoot a 24" model 92 .357 rifle with a 130 gr bullet@1075fps using Bullseye powder. It's not much louder than std. vel. .22 ammo out of a rifle.

DAVID, along those same lines; A couple years ago I shot my first sporting clays match. I am not a shotgunner, usually. I used my pre-1891-93 German proof law drilling, loaded with brass hulls and BP. (note to self, DO NOT use BP on a cool, damp, windless, May morning, down in the woods when shooting doubles) My first shot, the young man setting birds, about 14, yelled, OH!!!! Did his gun blow up?!?!?!

As an aside, I didn't shoot worth spit. A fellow shooter opined, "you don't shoot bad when you can see the birds."

I assume you're hunting deer on that stand. How does that mild load work on them?

If yo get them subsonic with a fast pistol powder like red dot, clays, etc it can be exceptionally quiet out of a rifle barrel. Initially I didn't see it, but I have become a fan boy of Trail Boss for light loads in the old BP cartridges. Absolutely LOVE it in my 38-40 and it makes really nice plinkers in the 30-30. I also think I'm going to love it in 25-20.
