    Does paper-patching work with non-deforming projectiles?

    I was wondering about the technical aspects;

    Does paper provide enough obturation by itself, or is the patch primarily there to keep the lead out of the grooves?
    In other words, is it really the expanding lead that provides a proper seal by pressing the paper tightly into the rifling?

    You might want to dig up the articles Ross Seyfried wrote in the American Rifleman in the ( I think) early 80's. As I recall, he used jacketed .458 diameter bullets and patched them up to work in a .465 Holland, which was really tough to find bullets for at the time. Again, if memory serves, he rolled the bullets over a file several times to put some texture on them, and it worked well. This would seem to indicate the paper is doing a good bit of the obturation, the heavy jackets of a 500 gr. 458 solid isn't going to expand much.

    Thanks. Yeah, I thought as much, but I wasn't quite sure.
    I'll post updates when testing yields any conclusive results.
