New to forum. Getting some loads ready for a M1903

Hello. Long time lurker now a new member. Anyway, I shot cast for several years then got away from it shooting mainly jacketed. In my Springfield M1903 I changed over to. CMP load. 110 grain Sierra Varmiter over 47 grains of IMR3031. It shot well and had less recoil than 150-168 grain loads.

Now, I have decided to come back to where I started. Cleaned the bore of copper and am ready to go. I am using my old stand by 311299 sized to .311. Federal Gold Medal match brass and WLR primers. I have used 5744 and IMR4227 in that rifle before I am going to try testing groups using IMR4227 with 16,17,&18 grains. Does anyone for see any problems with that? I am not using any Dacron filler. You think I need to tip the muzzle back?

Hope to hear some ideas back and look forward to being here. Thank you.

Welcome M1, I was shooting the 311299 just yesterday in a Win model 70 30 -06. I'm don't have the experience to comment on your load just wanted to welcome you in.

I've used 2400 in that range before and never had positioning issues can't speak of 4227 try a few 10 rd groups each way will tell the story
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!

Hello and welcome. I run 13 grains of red dot. In cast loads for 30.06. It has worked out well.

i’ve used 17grn-20grn of IMR4227 in 8x50R and 8x56R Mannlicher without issues, no barrel tipping or inconsistent ignition. it’s a significantly different case from 30-06, but the internal volume is similar, so i would expect to see similar results with ignition.

    Welcome to the Forum BTW.

The 311299 shoots OK in my 1903, but the RCBS 30-165 SIL shoots like a house afire with 20.5 grains of 2400. A 310 sizer is what I use for this one. No filler needed with this load either.

My 03 Springfield is fitted with a 4 groove barrel (08/44) and a 12X Leupold scope. Using the Lyman 311284 sized to 0.310" ahead of 31.5gn 3031 (1740fps) I printed this 10 shot group under MOA off a benchrest.

Two sighers and 20 shots "for record" of 30 CXB (NOE 310-165-FN) over 20 gr of 2400 w/dacron filler at 100 yards. Rifle is M1903A1 with RA-43 four groove barrel built into National Match Type II configuration.
