Need a load for Pb 300 gr .45-70

The few load books I have are not showing loads for Pb 300 gr. I have 250 bullets so want to load and shoot them out to 200 yards. Anyone have a mild recoil load that I can try. I do load black to the max so can use 777 if I have to, but my brother only likes smokeless in his Marlin unless I am paying for the rounds.

What powders do you have available?

Hodgdon supplies data for bullets from 250 grains on up on their web site using Hodgdon, Winchester, and IMR powders for both trapdoor and lever action rifles.

Generally, you can use the starting loads listed or reduce them even more if you wish, depending on what velocity you are looking for.

Stick to the Hodgdon (or any load book) “Trapdoor” loads and you will have light recoil round. Whether it makes it to 200 yards without a ton of drop is what you will have to play with.

I personally prefer 12-13 grains of Red Dot with any bullet in my Marlin 45-70 for plinking within 100 yards. Haven’t tried it at 200.

Get the second edition of Lyman’s “Cast Bullet Handbook”.

It has loads at three different levels for .45/70.
I suggest Unique for light loads, #2400 for “Hunting” loads, IMR3031 for Heavy Hunting loads/Bear stopper loads.
My 300gr loads (preferred) loads for Marlins is 29.5gr #2400 (what my measure throws). Gets 1675fps from 18.5”bbl, 1,750 from 22”bbl.
20.0gr with 400gr plain base Lee, for ~1,350fps. Very, very accurate.

The max OAL I can get is 2.481. Is this too short, it is seating the lead just covering the lube. The OAL of the bullet is .785, am seating .375 deep with a .060 wad over 777.

I prefer Bullseye under 210 - 300 gr PB cast bullets in the 45-70. No wad or filler is used or needed. I suggest 7.5 gr Bullseye under that 300 gr PB cast bullet. That will be a subsonic, pleasant and accurate load.

I have a couple of Model 1888 Springfields, and I read Larry's earlier posts about light loads with great interest. After corresponding with him, I decided to purchase or have made copies of two Rapine molds, 460210 and 460250, which are no longer available.

The first one, 460210, is essentially a hollow-base wadcutter. I had it cut by Tom Ellis at Accurate Molds to specs found on the NOE forum from about 4 years ago, as new catalog item 46-210RN, to drop .463" using 1:30 alloy, and had the base pins added by Erik Ohlen at www.hollowpointmold.com.

Larry recommended 6gr of Bullseye with this bullet for about 900 or so fps from the Trapdoor.



The second bullet, 460250, is a more conventional RN-FP, and was ordered straight from Accurate's catalog, number 46-275R, in the same 1:30 alloy. According to Larry, this bullet drops with range scrap at 275gr from the original Rapine mold, so this is right on the money.

Larry recommends 8gr of Bullseye with this bullet, for about 1140fps from the Trapdoor rifle.
