Y-man here again! I improved my Improvised Socket Slugs further...

Y-man here... Greetings! Its been a while... I hope you are all good?

I have been working on my Slugs, improving them further... Y'all remember that my success has been with Socket Slugs [15mm] on my Mossberg 500 with Rifled barrel...

So the first batches had a diameter of 17.7mm, and a length of 17.4mm. So the slugs were SHORTER than they were round.

I have now achieved a slight improvement along the "Spitzer" principle: and got slugs that are 19.9mm long, remaining 17.7mm round.

I have not test-fired yet [I am now based in Lagos, which is much further than where I was before to my Hometown and Farm: where I did most of my shooting in the past.]

I hope these work out ok...My question basically - from your experience: Are longer slugs with greater length-to-diameter ratios inherently more accurate?

    What do you think?

Y-man! It is so good to hear from you! I'm sorry you're further away from your farm/range - Do you have a place to shoot close to Lagos? How are you and your family faring in this time of Covid-19?

Thanks Hogtamer: maybe I will work on a new bottom pin to create a small hollow. That would shave off a little weight.

Hi Hogtamer: I weighed the two different versions: original: 32grams [494grains] but for the new ones - I am getting 39 to 40gms [617grains]
This shouldn't be too bad, I think...

Good to know you are still alive and kicking Y-man! It has been a while!

For rifled barrel I wouldn't think it would make much if any difference as to length other than longer bearing surface may provide better alignment especially if you are still using the wad slug version which at 17.7mm I am guessing you are.

There are a number of pretty short slug designs at Accurate:

    http://www.accuratemolds.com/catalog.php?page=25

Seems to me Ranchdog was testing out a pretty short Accurate full bore slug with good results. I'll have to read back and refresh my memory on that.

For HB slug or attached wad slug then yes, longer to a point is generally better due to drag stabilization and balance.
