Very good point about being able to count antler points. I hunt with a camp that has an 8 pt or better rule. I have never had great vision and I really appreciate a scope with good clarity but I need more than 4x.
My point is your eyes will not get any better. Give some thought to a 2-7 power. I have my scope set at maximum so I can count the points. I always take the shot at the max setting...but I am hunting from a blind or still hunting. If I need to track a deer I turn the magnification down.
I missed a 275 yard shot three years ago. I had dropped the rifle earlier in the week and could not verify POI. The scope was a cheaper Nikon and POI changed 5 MOA. I will never put an inexpensive scope on a hunting rifle. A well built solid scope will weigh more so there is a trade off.

Buy the best, not necessarily most expensive scope. Do some reading on testing sites and you will find a good answer. Since antlers are not very tasty, I see your point. I have used Burris, Leupold and older Bausch & Lomb with great results. I even have a Simmons 3x9 Whitetail Classic that will hold its own with anything under $800.00; clear as a bell and holds zero better than some of the more expensive models of scopes. But IT IS unusual in that respect, as scopes in its price range usually come with limitations. It may even be a one of a kind as the Whitetail Classic does not fair very well in reviews. I just wish some of the scope makers would offer more fixed power scopes like the older ones as I usually use my scopes sighted in and they remain set on the highest power. I have a Leupold 6x38mm M8 scope that is about ideal for 200 yards and under. I have also found that any scope over 7 or 8 X really needs an adjustable objective to be able to adjust for different distances encountered. my experience anyway, james

Personally, I love low powered fixed scopes. I really like the old Leupold Ultralight 2.5x20 which is a very useful scope in so many applications. A 22LR? Yes. A little pistol caliber carbine? Yes. A 30-30 Lever gun? Yes. Most single shot rifles? Yes. A slug-gun? Yes. Even basically any big game rifle is a good fit for this scope. About the only application to which it is not suited is to shooting paper at long ranges or on a varmint rifle. I got mine for 200 bucks not too long ago.
Another scope I like is the Leupold VX-1 1-4x20 "shotgun" or "muzzloader scope." I got one of these for 180 not too long ago.
But the most impressive scope I've had lately is the Leupold VX-R Patrol 1-4x30mm scope with fire-dot ballistic reticle and eternally adjustable turrets (that are not under a cap). This thing is simply amazing. It is indeed more than what anyone would need for typical gun chores though. I believe it is intended for police marksmen. Midway was running an exclusive sale on these scopes not too long ago, selling them for approximately half of what their MSRP. Which completely explodes the idea that you get what you pay for with scopes. The truth is you get about half what you pay for if I am assuming that Midway was selling them at cost.
Another optical piece I've really come to appreciate are Ultradots. The basic 20 mm Ultradot with a 2MOA reticle is very useful for so many things, including handguns. There is no eye relief issue with red dots, which makes them incredibly flexible. Aim/Point and shoot!
A Leupold 1-4 x VX1 is <$200. I have one on my R1 Pellet gun which is a beast! no problem!
I have a Leupold VX3 1-5X on my Ruger Guide Gun .30-06. I paid $300 for it used and it came off a .416 Rigby Mauser Rifle. It has been perfect for 15+ years.

I would like to echo some of the others with the Leupold M8, but in a 6x magnification. We have been changing out and getting away from the variable magnification and going to the M8 when we can find them. The last one I bought a friend of mine found at a gunshow. Even with his finder's fee it was under a $100 bill. That scope resides on the wife's 6.5x55 Tikka. The 9.3x62 wears a leupold freedom 1.75-4? Freedom with the pig plex on it. Great little scope. Any way you look at it, the scope is an investment that shouldn't be skimped on. I drank from the cool-aid that a "Scope is a scope" and boy was I wrong! Good luck on your search.
i have two 2-7x Leopold Freedom on my tc encore in 500 linebaugh(23" MGM barrel) and my husky m46 in 9.3x57. i think it was $200 for each and a lifetime warranty. i'm going to get one for my youngest son in a 93 Spanish mauser in 7x57 in a green mountain barrel.
