Butt Plate Material

I have a Ruger American rifle, I like it a lot, but it's a hair too long (length of pull). I removed the recoil pad which shortened it by about an inch, the length fits me pretty good but now I need a butt plate. I was thinking of a piece of .062" aluminum but it would be pretty slippery on my shoulder. This is a .223 Remington so I'm not concerned about recoil but want something that won't slip off my shoulder. Does anyone have a recommendation?

Checker it, or stipple it with a prick punch to give it a less slippery surface. Or get a piece of steel of about the same thickness, and do the same thing to it. It will be a bit more difficult to do, but also more durable.

I bought a M38 Mosin that the previous owner put some 3m black grip tape on the steel buttplate, I debated removing it but it works and is removable whenever I fell like it.

You might try the tool grip rubber in a can. seal any openings with tape or other material wrap tape up so its 1/2-3/4" above stock make a few marks around with a pencil 1/16-1/8" up, clamp so stock is level in both directions. pour in the rubber to the marks for height and let cure. Pour a little heavy to allow for any shrinkage when it cures. You can make a form to pour the tool grip into and cure gluing it on for installation. Or a piece of .030 aluminum flashing under it even to stiffen if some. This needs to be right as I dont think you can sand or file this material.
The other material would be bedding compound died to the desired color .

One trick when poured in is to warm it with a blow drier to thin and release any air bubbles.

If you make the form consider melting pewter and pouring it, Here tape stock of with thin layer of tape and set in a waxed box with thick plaster of Paris let dry remove stock let cure for a few days more. remove box and set on pot while melting pewter to finish curing. pour molten pewter in and let cool. This can be filed and sanded. Or you use the old pad for the mold you will get a image of its surface in the pewter. Zinc could also be used but requires more heat.

get a takeoff from numrich, just be sure it is a flat one, and cut it to fit. or you can get the thin butt pad from white line, or any of the other makers. I found some Ruger pads, just didn't buy enough of them, worked really well.

Use a thin piece of exotic wood and hold it on with magnets.
The wood can be checkered or stippled.

I'm gonna' give this a shot! The gun is painted camo now, the textured bed liner will look pretty good and solve the problem. Thanks RU Shooter!

I saw a plastic one done like that and it not only worked really good but it looked good also, wouldn't be able to see the difference between plastic or aluminum under the spray-on liner so it definitely would work!

Just about every gun show has someone with a box of butt plates. Wouldn't be hard to find one to trim down.

I'd get a thin pad from Brownells and fit it to the stock they make very thin recoil pads/butt pads.

I'd check with Numrich gunparts and ask id they have aby checkered steel Winchester buttplates for sale. If they do get two. One top ractise on and another in case you screw up. I have one on my Win m52 22rf target rifle. easily the definition of non slip. Either that or get a White Line butt pad. Has no real recoil capabilities only serves to not let the butt of the rifle slip off the shoulder. In fact the ridges run cross ways and point downwards against the direction the pad will take if it slipped. A lot of them were standard equipment on Model 70 Match rifles. Hope this helps. Frank

centershot -- I once bought a Remington Model 8 which was 6 1/2 smidgeons (technical measurement) too short -- I gather, in the old days, folks had shorter arms? In any case, I had purchased previously a bag of "leather scraps and pieces" at a gun show, and one piece was allllmost the perfect size. "Why not?" I applied it, shiny side to butt -- with some Weldwood contact cement, and then trimmed it with an XActo knife. Three things, to wit: 1/ (Most important) It functioned so well I contemplated applying leather to other rifle butts; 2/ If it didn't work, I reckoned I could readily remove it -- no harm, no foul; and 3/ A "worry" I had that it would in short order really become unattractive did not come to fruition. As it got damp and dirty (but, dried a.s.a.p. ) it actually complemented the rifle's looks.
