    8x58RD Gustaf Coal Mine

Friends, I have never seen anything like the barrel of this Gustaf 8x58RD Rolling Block.

The barrel is a veritable coal mine!

I have made over sixty passes of (insert bore cleaner name here), soak overnight, wire brush, wire brush with brass scouring media, Corbin bore shine, Rem bore cleaner. Name one.

I am careful to clean the bore with brake cleaner and such when I change solvents.

NOTHING. And, friends? I MEAN NOTHING MAKES A DENT IN THIS SUCKER!!!!

I've never seen anything quite like it.

Image below after about the 60th pass; soak overnight or more, scrub, patch, and do it again (kind of like shampoo instructions?)

I've even tried the Lewis Lead remover in hopes that it will scavenge carbon. No joy. None at all.

    Thoughts? Ream and reline?

I'll eventually get the bore image in here but this web page is being recalcitrant.

Why does this page only give the the option of loading from a web cache when most times I can upload from my computer??????

I'm not even sure these links will work.

    What a PITA.

Suffice it to say that I have NEVER seen this much carbon in a bore before.

Have yopu considered fire lapping? I had a MH 577/450 barrel that looked similar and carefully put 30 rounds of cast boolits coated with 600 grit valve grinding paste, first 10 fire one and clean, second 10 fire 2 and clean, last 10 fire 5 and clean. It is now one of the best cast boolit shooters that I have!

Sounds like its full of rust to me...when they wont come clean ,its generally rust ...Id try electrolysis, then maybe try firelapping .... Well no ,I wouldnt ..Id do proper lapping ,using cast slugs .....For cast bullets ,only precaution is dont enlarge the muzzle ,or accuracy will suffer.

+1 on electrolysis. It looks like rust.

looks like exposed grain of the metal after bad rust is removed. Hard to tell from the pic though.

1st experience with a very old, converted military rifle? Some are....frustrating beyond description but, most will eventually come clean.

Generally those old rollers shoot pretty good, mine does but had to re-work the front sight ramp and sight as it shot so high with the best load.

Pictures.... I had a lot of frustration with getting pictures to up load but found a setting on my old camera that was labled VGA I think. That is apparently a shrink wrap for pictures that sizes them down so you can send them in email easily . This I discovered by accident, classic blind squirrel finding the occasional nut scenario. So now I find that my cell phone automatically makes pictures that it can send and those will upload to here without a hitch. Larger Size of the file will foil your upload. Sorry for the drift there.

That is indeed a rough bore, to state the obvious and get back to the original subject.

What your Teslong is showing in you’re bore is rust (imho it’s not that bad).

That said, short of robust fire lapping, you're liable to work yourself to death trying “clean” the bore to a point that your satisfied.

My recommendation is to take it out and shoot it and see how it performs.

The bore on this old Marlin 1893 is considerably worse than yours with pitting and corrosion throughout its length and with minimal load tweaking it shoots a whole lot better than I can.

Maybe a few paper patched rounds?

Just enough 600 grit to dull the sharp edges of the rust pits and you're good to go. That would be two or three fire-lap rounds or a few strokes with grit on a cloth patch - toward the muzzle only.

    My most accurate rifle bore.

    Bullet fired through it.
