    Scrap yard haul

Called the scrapper this am. He said he had about 500 pounds. Worth the 15 mile drive. Jackpot 1795 pounds later I left the lotClick image for larger version.

    Sorry double tap.

Mostly Lead sheet with some lead pipe and shielding.

Now the fun (smelting) starts tomorrow.

Nice haul, congrat's. Lead sheeting is my favorite source of pure lead.

    Very good.

Back in the day, when I'd have enough Alum. and Copper to make a run to the scrap yard,
I would go, but ended up coming home with more cool stuff and Lead than I went in with.

I'd cash in, then spend a few bucks more buying stuff out of there.

A guy recently gave me about 350 lbs of lead sheeting that came from the demo of a dental office. It have been stuck to drywall to prevent x-rays from penetrating the wall into the next room. It was nasty stuff to melt down with all the paper; I've filled several #10 with trash and paper while melting it down; nasty stuff but the price was right.

BTDT. About a month ago I had some of the same stuff. The paper and glue on the lead make it a PITA to melt down. The lead sheeting that comes off roofs is SO much better to deal with.

Paper and glue? Why is that an issue? Stand upwind and WARN (don't TELL!) your neighbors to close their windows (they will be happy you told them!)

I melted down around 2000# of range salvage behind my suburban home in Orange County CA 25 or 30 years ago. It had all manner of crap including paper and plastic wads in it. It was smokey as hell. I waited for breezy evenings. Never got a complaint.

Borrowed a 150# furnace from a friend and had exactly two weeks to get it done. Sold a great deal of those 7# ingots when I moved to AZ 28 years later.

At the time it was a ten year supply. A broken back in the interim put the kibosh on that stuff, so I just brought the w/w 1 lb ingots to AZ.

I also learned that it's not particularly good if it's a bit windy (slows down the process) but it sure was nice blowing all the crap from the burn off the paper and glue towards the neighbors, that fortunately happened to be out of town that day.

I wish the scrap yards would sell to people around here. My nearest neighbor is almost 1/2 mile away and it is a small ranch.

    Great score.

Your truck's suspension also impresses me: it doesn't seem to notice all that lead one bit. When I pick up a load, lots of times I have to make a second or even a third trip to avoid bottoming out.

    pcmacd,

You obviously have never done it. It's got nothing to do with smoke/fumes. What you get are large amounts of glue and paper debris in the melt that have to be removed, and I mean lots. Right jakemo?

Other than slightly longer stopping distance, it drives like normal. Gotta love GMC.

I too am envious, scrappers and recyclers cannot sell lead as it is a Hazardous Material here in Wisconsin and Illinois. Great score though.

I called a scrap yard in Walla Walla and they had a barrel of fishing weights for $0.25 a pound.

I made a trip into WW and left the info on the scrap yard at home. A quick Google Search and I thought that I had found it. I called and asked "is this the place I called last week? " the owner told me "yes".

I showed up and loaded up two hundred pounds of lead. They were not very friendly and it got worse. After going over the scale, they haned me a $396 bill. I, very nicely, told him that I had been quoted $0.25 a pound. He went ballistic and stared yelling at me. I walked away, unloaded my truck and left.

Got home and found that I had gone to a different place. When he assured me that I was calling the right place he was fibbing...

I have had great luck with vendors here. I am going to stick with them for now.
