I had an old Lee Enfield, already cut, already drilled for sights and mounts. Got bored staying inside so I made some changes. I plan to build a better stock, this one is Russian birch.

Great job. I've always stayed away from buying one of these due to the Butt Ugly design of the butt socket. You might have a bright future on doing this type of conversion for this butt ugly British design.

Really not much skill involved, The metal was cut with a hacksaw and finished with files. Pieces welded to rear of trigger guard and receiver, then finished with files. drill and tap the block welded to receiver. The stock is three pieces of Russian Birch plywood(russian birch has thinner layers). The center piece is cut and fitted as close as possible first, clamped into position and then sides are glued to center piece one at a time. this makes final fitting a lot easier. The outside profile is cut with a jigsaw and finished with a bench belt sander. Three pieces of solid wood would be much easier than plywood because of opposing grain in plywood. Action and trigger guard are both bedded into stock with plastic steel.

Well done on your Enfield conversion!

Judging by you screen name I would hazard to guess you are an admirer of James Paris Lee's designs... Might you have seen the Canadian Experimental Lightweight No4 Enfield? Your modification are similar except Long Branch moved the trigger to the receiver and went with an aluminum trigger guard to reduce weight. Hanging the trigger on the receiver would take a bit more work and machining which was probably not in the scope your project. But yours is similar in some respects and done with the tools you described came out very well. Thanks for sharing.

It is estimated somewhere between 30-50 of the Long Branch Lightweight No4 rifles were made. Some were even sporterized post war.

Thank You. Actually, I have Rem Lee factory sporter in 303 British, I even have the 4 magazines but 3 are rusty. I hate to shoot it for fear of splitting the stock but I have fired it and I like it.

Interesting how they mounted the rear peep sight to the cocking piece. You can sure see the linage to the Metford and Enfield models.

Splitting the stock; from my reading that's how they came up with the socketed butt to avoid this very problem.

Maybe reduced loads could be shot without fear of stock damage?
