    Can this coating be removed?

I have roughly 700 Speer 230 gr. RNL that have a clear coating on them. They lead like all get out and since I'm about to start using Hi Tek coating I was playing with idea of removing the clear coating on them somehow. Not sure if its really feasible does anyone have an idea? Acetone soak maybe?

Is it a waxy coating? I cleaned up some lubed 45swc by standing them up on a few stacked paper towels and baking them for a bit at a low temp. When I asked how to remove the lube someone also suggested boiling them and the lube would melt and float leaving them clean.

I tried boiling some alox off , it got some but not all , rinsed in acetone or paint thinner and it came right off and powder coated fine . Ha I see you are using hi-tek , no idea on it bonding or not , how about melting them down and making a new bullet out of them ?

Removing the coating will not be the only problem you will face, I would bet the cast have also been run through a sizer which smooths the surface and stops Hi-Tek sticking. Should you find a way to remove the clear coating you will have to soak the cast in an acid to etch the surface so Hi-Tek can stick to cast. I would put this question to Hi -Tek Joe on the Hi-Tek thread. You will find all the answers there and Joe will put you on the right path. Regards Stephen

HiTek needs raw lead to stick right.

You could try removing the coating with acetone.

You could try lubing them with alox to see if that helps.

I would just smelt them and start over

Thanks guys these are the speer cold formed multilayer lube. Not sure if it's like a hi tek coating. Got a feeling I may be melting them but will still try a acetone soak overnight on a few to see what happens.

Melt them down. The chances of successfully removing any coating so you can re-coat them is very slim. Any traces of contamination will stop the coating from sticking.

Obviously the simplest way to go so +1
Also the coating, if wax will make for a good flux

I took a bunch of Speer .358" swaged/lead 158gr swc hp's and cleaned them with acetone, and then powder coated them with Smoke's PC in blue color. Worked great.

Loaded to magnum speeds in a 4" Model 19 S&W, they shoot accurate, and don't lead or strip in the barrel.

I think I’d check sizing first, the leading may not be because of their lube/coating.
