    Something Different Small Bore

Was looking at what's out there for cobbling up another cast cartridge with a lengthened neck.
There's a #280473 and a #280642 sitting neglected in the fun box. What a neglected caliber!

    So, what if.
A rimmed case with a lengthened neck could be made running 30-30's into a 6.8SPC sizer, trimming to length and fire forming.
Could a 6.8 barrel blank could be chambered by running the reamer in a tad deeper and then cutting the rim? And then cut the neck to the length wanted for the lube grooves to be covered and boolit lengths to be used.

If I had an extra single shot sitting around, yeah, I'd like to try something like that. Meanwhile I'll dream on and enjoy the .25's and .28's.

For some reason I typed in 6.5 previously. Just changed that to 6.8.

Todd, been having the thoughts about 6.5 too.
Got a 6.5mm x 19" long barrel blank cheap from Green Mountain and then life intervened and my project went on hold.
Now oh golly, maybe I might try paper patching the "280" diameter molds in the 7-08.

Or look around for a Savage 99 in .300 Savage with a bad bore and rebarrel to .270 Titus. Would make a practical shooter, and since it was originally designed to function through the .300 rotor with out modification, just a rebarrel does it. Just saying. Otherwise, you might want to look at the 7-30 Waters AI versions as inspiration, load data should be close too.

Why not simply chamber for 270 Savage? I'm loading 140gn cast boolits and it shoots very well!

Sent RCBS an information request as to whether or not the 6.8SPC sizer dies will receive 30-30 brass without trimming first. And joined up on the 6.8 forum explaining the idea and requesting assistance. Perhaps someone there will be willing to assist and queue me in on the brand of dies that will work. Hopefully so, we'll see.

    RCBS came through.
Per their test there's no problem with the 6.8SPC dies full length sizing 30-30 brass with the decapping pin and neck expander. Just keep bumping a little at a time.
Takes away the question concerning the possible neck lengths with the internal geometry of their dies.
Posted a "WTB" ad in the Buy & Sell forum for RCBS dies.
This may turn out to be a really fun project.

I think you will have a fun project there. I use the 280473 bullets in my 270 IHMSA. The bullet sized, lubed and with a GC is 130 grains. The best load so far is 18 grains of H4227 with a 1 grain tuft of Dacron . The neck of the brass is long enough that the base of the bullet when seated does not intrude into the body of the case. It shoots really well. Disclaimer time: This load works in my rifle. It might not do well in yours. As a handloader you and only you are responsible for the rounds you make. And it has been a really fun project.

    Well, things are looking up.
Got a set of RCBS taper crimp dies coming.

    The 6.8 dies arrived.
    Sizing 30-30 brass is easy.
Time to cast some boolits and figger out the neck length, check my ideas on the action...

Been looking at rates of twist.
Have any of you guys worked with the commonly available .270 molds?
Have anything to contribute concerning how they do in whatever twist you have?

I have a 1/10 twist Winchester 70 in 270. I does better with heavier projectiles, the lighter ones (under120 grains) were not impressive. I stick with the Lee 135 grainer and the RCBS 150 grainer. I am looking for the Lyman plain based 280412. Ive tried most of the others and keep coming back to these two.

I didn't understand all of the mold numbers and i probably need to know the caliber you are looking at. But i did hear the part about LONG NECK. I have been wanting to make a suppressed rifle and I have and old turk action to build on. It has a a bolt face that is sized for the 8mm mauser cartridge. So a 300BLK was too much machine work for me. So I decided that a smaller case could happen and use the bolt face i had with 308 brass. My friend has a ring die that i think was made by RCBS and he told me run military brass through it and you will have 30BR. Commercial brass was not 100% some split and some wrinkled up. I ran over 100 Lake city cases through and have a real nice 30 BR case with a neck about and inch long. They will have to be cut at some time, but how much? I can't afford real 30br dies (BR super expensive stuff)but after I settle on a reamer I may be able to cut some used 6 br dies into some thing that will work for me. Part of my plan was to have a case small enough for subs, but big enough for decent supersonic loads also. we will see. Any way depending on how much case capacity you need a die of this type doesn't look too complicated to make. you could push back the shoulder of an 06 case or just about anything to get the long neck you need.
