All natural lip balm as lube

    Hey everyone,

So my girlfriend's friend made us a bunch of all-natural lip balm made of beeswax, coconut oil, shea, and vitamin E oil. Not sure what the proportions are, but it has the consistency of normal lip balm. Problem is it is cinnamon scented and I hate it. Could I use it as bullet lube or patch lube? I imagine I might need to melt it down and cut it with more oil if I use it for patch lube. Might even be a little stiff for bullet lube. What do you say?

It's worth a try. I've made up some pretty unusual lubes, and most of them worked OK.

It should work if there’s a lot of bee’s wax in it and the coconut oil doesn’t leave too much carbon behind. No idea what it’s flash point is. I use veg oils with high flash points like Canola. Otherwise, just add to a batch of other lube.

Coconut oil is pretty high I think. No idea about the shea or vitamin E oil. Maybe I'll mix it wish some avacado oil to keep flash point high. You think I could use it for flux too?

Probably don't have enough beeswax in it, too much and it will rip your lips.

    Try it.

If it works, tell her how wonderful it is, how your lips never felt better, and you feel bad for using it up so fast.
You may get a free source for bullet lube.

I don't know about a boolit lube but, it WILL make a good patch lube. For years I have carried a tube of chapstick to use as patch lube when hunting.

I would suggest you use the proper lube for the application.
Your lip balm may work??? or it may throw lube purge fliers? or it may foul the bore?
...It's not like the proper lube is cost prohibitive.

Some seem to have great luck with the remarked and scented chapstick lube.

    As long as it works.
I've carried a chapstick in every vehicle I've owned for the last 44yrs. Wife can't live with out it.
It does make excellent BP Lube. If a bit expensive.

    Title says
All natural lip balm as lube

    How about...

All natural bullet lube as lip balm?

I keep some lube around in a #11 cap tin for just that reason.

Yeah. A LOT of bits of this and that cautiously mixed in tiny or large increments (if mixed at high noon or at midnight on a new moon) often work quite well. In fact it seems harder and harder for experts with new special lube formulas to get much attention anymore. Wonder if maybe that means special bullet lubes aren't nearly as critical as some folk think? (Ditto for case sizing lubes.)

I like to keep things simple. WHY?

It likely has more value as poor lip balm than excellent lube. Sell the junk and buy 3-4 times of what you know works.

Why? Well, there's no challenge (and not much fun) in just buying is there? The challenge to make better than store bought ammo is part of why many of us reload and why some of us even make our own bullets. After all, nothing is actually "made" to be bullet or case lubes (nor even lip balms); it's all just someone else's mixture, same as our casting alloys are just mixtures of low temp metals.

You don't mention what type of shooting you'll be doing with ? A lower speed plinker load probably work fine in rifles , same with non magnum levels in handguns, I've taken a simple mix of Bees wax and vasoline 50/50 to 1800 fps in 30 cal rifles

I have been known to refill one of those tubes with 50/50 bw /vas and use it as a crayon to lube bullets for testing.
