And a half piece of 1.5 brass pipe. barrels were toast so stuck as much in the shop vice tightened it down and installed my gizmo. The brass pipe went over the receiver ring to prevent scratches on the 98 mauser. One good whack with a 32 oz ball pien hammer loosened that barrel and a 10" pipe wrench did the rest. The #4 got the same teatment and came off as well. Surprised the mauser came off so easily. The #4's barrel also came off easily. So goes to show you that all barrel installations are not equal. Some come offeasily and others fight you tooth and nail. Frank
    Thanks Frank!

Barrels come off easily when you have the right equipment....years ago ,when sporterizing milsurps paid a weekly wage ,an old guy used to bend G98 barrels into an L shape ,and use that as a handle to unscrew them.

Well, I have it all finished now. I wanted to try Birchwood Casey's browning solution but none to be had locally and I wasn't in the mood to wait for shipping. I reverted back to my old standby, paint. NAPA says the Duplicolor high temp paint is discontinued but they list VHT SP102 as a replacement. So, after degreasing the barreled action with Breakleen I painted it all up and baked it out at 400*F for a couple hours.

Not too bad. It's also more in line with the original Enfield finish.

I'm going to order the BC browning and try it out on a couple old falling block conversions I've done that have been waiting to be finished.

we are prohibited the use of suppressors and can never own them here ,,but fake ones are still allowed .But we can use short barrels as long as they are new manufacture and NOT CUT DOWN ,mine has a 14 " barrel and and is 31" long as minimum is 26 "
    Cheers

It is beautiful. I have a project ongoing with the kit for the Mauser, but I'm using a 03-A3 knock off - cast receiver made by Golden State Arms - no collector value there. Started the project about 25 or 30 years ago. Had my gunsmith cut the barrel down flush, and then put on an old Volunteer Carbine 45 acp barrel - the Volunteer Carbine was itself a knock off of the Thompson Subgun. Your article gives me the impetus to finish it up.

I based it on that bit in Hatcher's Notebook where the arsenal converted an 03 to shoot 45 acp.

    Greetings,

I like what you did there, and am on that path myself!

I bought one that was already done but want to make a #5 clone out of it. And am in need of some parts :

1- complete ladder style rear sight assembly.

2- rear hand guard retainer ring.

    3- rear hand guard

4- rear hand guard band assembly.

    5- #5 Jungle Carbine front sight/flashhider assembly.

6- forestock at least 20” long, prefer longer but doesn’t have to be original length.

    Here is the donor rifle:

Some nice rifle there guys. I have heard of the actions and bolts being shortened and welded together and making for a short action. I have an old action I have considered doing this too. Regards Stephen

    Deavis,
When I did my No5 Carbine clone I found most of the parts I needed from Numrich gun parts. The No5 used a micrometer rear sight and I found an original at Aim Surplus. Ebay is also a good source for parts.

We're in the area, where do you shoot?

    Stephen,
A shorter action like the DeLisle would be great and solve most of the feeding/extraction problems (if done right) and would make for a nice handy little carbine. Unfortunately the time and tools required I can't afford at the moment. As is, the carbine turned out better then I expected and is quite enjoyable to shoot.

For something a little smaller and lighter I'd like to convert a single shot .410 to .45acp like the one I converted to .38spl. At 4.5 lbs it's real easy to carry. Just trying to figure out how to make an extractor work for the rimless case.

tbx-4, I think your conversion is just fine, the only reason I would consider shortening my version is I have a gunsmith mate and I do his stock work and he does my gunsmithing. I wish I had thought of the 410 conversion before I gave mine away. Many ask why one would do such a conversion and the answer is, because we can. Regards Stephen
