New **Special** Contender Wood For The Entire Family

To completely explain the importance of this New Wood I will start with a little background. My Dad, God rest his soul (He would have been 92 this year) really enjoyed working with wood. He and several of his friends cut a Huge Black Walnut tree down and hauled it to the saw mill. I was about 12 so that would make it about 50 years ago. Daddy kept a 3X10 8 foot long piece of the center of this tree. His plans were to make a mantel for His living room. Unfortunately He never got around to His mantel. After several years of trying to decide what I could use it for, I contacted a Friend of mine Mr. Dave Dolin. The rest is history. I explained to him that I knew nothing about this wood but trusted him to be honest and if it was useless at least it would make a good fire.
Just got a package in the mail from a Fine Gentleman and a good Friend. I was like a Child on Christmas Morning. Couldn't wait to open them. Two are Mine, one is for my Son, one is for my Son-In-Law and the final set is for my Grandson. Can't wait to get them finished. The have some very small defects (look PERFECT to Me), but they sure put a smile on my face when I see them. I know Daddy is looking down and smiling knowing His mantel will be enjoyed by all of us. I sure do miss that precious Man

    Thanks again Brother Dave

Very nice work, and appears they have enough extra to shape, but not so much as to make hours of shaping necessary. I have a big chunk of presentation grade walnut here that unfortunately cracked a little over time, and not sure there's enough good clear wood to get a rifle stock out of. Not even maybe a two piece rifle stock for a single shot. I hope someday I'll find a project to use it on that will be worth the quality wood, and small enough.
I may take it to someone who can cut it near the cracks so I can better assess what it can be used for.

Walnut is fantastic, and while I'm not a contour grip kind of guy, I can certainly appreciate the awesome amount of time put into those sets. I'm very interested in seeing how they look finished. I've been on a tung oil kick lately cause it's easy, but linseed oil applied appropriately would be more traditional and leave an amazing finish.

Years ago I made a forearm that looks almost exactly like those... I made mine long, wide and a little tall for working from a bench rest. Works very well!

Thanks fellows. I am in the process of finishing them for sure. Taking my time, as arms require many more breaks than they used to. LOL. Some are beginning to look better. Some still have a way to go. Retired 3-20-2020 after about 15 years as a FF/EMT. Got out just in time. Will post pics as I get them finished
Thanks for all the kind word and Everybody Please STAY SAFE

Would it be possible to have the name , address, and phone number of the friend who shaped the forearms. Looks as if they are for a Contender. I have a 25 year old piece of clear walnut that came from Calico hardwoods of windsor, calif. and would like to have a froearm shaped from it. thanks dworley790@gmail.com
