I took my '76 to the range today to chrono some loads. Here is what I checked.
I chrono'd four loads, all with 350gr bullets.
27.0gr of 5744 = 1180fps avg.
30gr of 5744 = 1272fps avg.
36.0gr of 5744 = 1501fps avg.
83.0gr Swiss 1.5F = 1503fps avg.

You fellers have got me hooked
what possible "Genuine Reason" could I have for wanting a 50/95? (we need to have a Genuine Reason for licencing downunder!)
some 45/75 test numbers - yeah we off thread but this will make me feel better
466grain modified postel style boolit ... 72 grains FFg (My Black) = 1244 FPS
335 grain modified LEE 405hb boolit ... 70 grains (heavily compressed load) = 1505 FPS
the same boolit from my 45/70 Chiappa '86 -- 6 grains 4227 + 63 grains FFFg = 1548 FPS
405 grain LEE boolit from my 45/70 Chiappa - 6 grains 4227 + 55 grains FFFG = 1362 FPS
Those velocities look right at what we got using 3F and 5744.
Thank you for posting this !
Your 76 … Does it have a 26 inch barrel ?
"Come unto Me, all you who labor and are heavy burdened, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28
Male Guanaco out in dry lakebed at 10,800 feet south of Arequipa.
Its 28". I believe that was the standard M1876 rifle barrel length.
I take it the Axtell sight co. is out of business? I googled it and found nothing really, old threads about them, a dead link to its website. I'm leaning towards a MVA for my 45/75.
Good looking out ndnchf! My next rifle and cartridge.
Yes it made a nice boolit - carries plenty of lube - I shoot blackpowder exclusively in this gun so dont need a crimp groove - the nose is too long to use it for smokeless - I wuz gonna do that and I cut a batch of cases short so I could crimp into the front of the lube groove (and also for the LEE 340 grain mold) but the Uberti likes blackpowder (I make mine) so I never went the smokeless track - couldnt see the point
These look different diameter - thats an optical delusion - you have a 335 grain and a 405 grain both outta the same mold - both are flat base - nose pour - nice wider flat nose - I use a 45 to 60 thou HDPE wad under these.
I took the LEE 405HB mold
- made a new base plug that shortened it by one lube groove/driving band
- was a bit nervous of the nose because it was smaller diameter than the primer pocket, and a little rounded, so I milled a little off the mold surface till I had the flat nose bigger than the primer pocket (lotsa guys think that is overprecautious - but my fingers, my gun, 20dollar mold and its worked)
- did similar operation to the 405 grain version - nipped the HB tit off the base plug and milled the front end
I made this for mine (not the eyepiece thats a parker hale I scrounged at a shoot for ten bucks)
Attachment 259032
Sometimes (not often) when we get our stuff together we can do this
Pulled one a little high and right - a habit I have been unable to kick in thirty years
I think that was the LEE 500 3R boolit - 5 shots at100yards
