    1917 p14 in 405

    Just thinking
How hard would it be to use a p14 action with a 3 03 bolt to make a bolt action 405 win rifle?

Think you would be better off using an original P14 bolt as the rim recess was cut for the 303 British cartridge and also the 30-40 Krag cartridge fits well. Since the 405 cartridge is the same as far as the diameter of the rim is concerned. And the P14 bolt of course was original equipment for the P14. That and the extractor on the P14 was designed for rimmed cartridges and the extractor on the 03A3 bolt was designed for non rimmed cartridges. Hope this helps. Never tried fitting a Springfield bolt in a P14 and doubt it would fit and function. Frank

I'm sure it can be done but, getting it to feed may prove to be very interesting. I built a 45-70 on a P-14 for a friend many years ago and it was a bit of a challenge. Good luck. Let us know how it works out.

I rebarreled a P14 to .450 Marlin and it worked. I'm not at all familiar with the .405 cartridge but if the head size is close to the .303 and the COAL is similar you are halfway there.

Did you have to do any bolt work or did factory 303 bolt work?

The .303 bolt is a perfect fit for the belted case as is.

What some guys do is use the P1917 with a P14 bolt and the P14 mag assembly with magnum cartridges. However it should work with the 45/70 as well. Frank

I had to make an magazine insert to feed cartridges single stack . Other than that the SMLE action works great for 405 !

Bought a P14 long time ago that had been converted to single shot with an insert in the mag the fellow made of wood. Chambered in 38-55. Think it was a Shilen barrel. Man, that thing will flat out shoot!!

I’ve never thought of building a bolt action 405 on Enfield but why won’t it work 303 is rimmed. I had a 1917 Enfield in 2” American 458 years ago. I didn’t have it built but new the Smith who built it and others on 98s in 60s. The 458American, 450 Marlin and 45/70 are that powerful and not much different.

If a .444 were matched up with a barrel twist that would handle heavy boolits it would sure be a fun project to play with. GF

Just wish I could find someone to make one off barrels for me savage style with the barrel nut to make some projects I have in mind ....cuts would have to be made for rimmed cartridges but rimlesa like the 458 American on a 1917 action would be doable

Get a barrel blank and have it turned to the diam you need for threads and have the same smith make you a barrel nut to match the receiver you want to use. A lot of receivers will work without too much modification.

BSA built factory sporting rifles on Lee Metford and SMLE actions ,chambered in 375 x2 1/2 " FNE , and sold them to the public . The cases can be made from 405 brass with minimal modifications .I have one in the pipeline at the moment.
