All the "Remington or Federal factory ammo" in 45-70 is trapdoor specs, minimal performance in this fine caliber. A Cheaper bulk factory ammo is Calbela's cowboy loads (405gr lead) which are black hills (i think) work fine for most "plinking". When you find out how much fun and how well model shoots I expect reloading will be come very attractive.

Garret and other HOT similar "+P 45-70" ammo works fine in the "new" 1886's and Marlins, and are effective on any north American mammal, (1800fps/420gr gaschecked cast bullets) Leverlution is probably a waste of $$ in this caliber.

This is a very easy caliber to reload for, and much better performance can be attained, cheaper, with hand loads and lead bullets. Most any weight of cast bullet can be configured for what ever purpose needed. I shoot 300, and 405's and cast my own 420's for elk. Useful powders are Unique, 5744, 3031, 4298, Rx7.(1200-1400fps is plenty) Unlike my Marlin, clover leaf accuracy, can be attained at non-punishing velocities. I have found that using low end of loading tables (specifically for Marlin 1895 and 1866) are comfortable and accurate. I like the "45-70 reloading guide", (powders and bullet combination's,with sections on trapdoor, modern levers, Ruger single shots) available the Big Box stores. I shoot a thousand or so, of these per year but only a handful of the Garrets around elk season. Shoots black powder great too

    Talking 45-70 loads

My favorite cast bullet is the gould 330 gr hollow point. It is accurate and fast for the type caliber. The hollow point makes it big medicine for deer bar elk etc Once more, it is relatively easy on the shoulder. JIMBO

    Bassleg,

I hope you are a good friend of the missionary and are joking around.

If not, please understand that we are a polite and friendly group. I see that
you are new here, and hope you will try to be friendly and polite yourself.

As far as I can see, misisonary's two posts are on topic, friendly and nice.

Yours does not come across that way, but perhaps I misunderstood your
meaning. If I misunderstood you, I'm sorry. If you are being rude, please
    cut it out.

    Thanks.

you will need to expect an answer like that to a question like you asked. Theres no way to tell you what your particular rifle will shoot well. Every gun is different. Its like looking at a new born baby girl and predicting what kind of a boy she will be attracted to.
