New sights for my Henry

I read about a replacement sight "package" on a blog I read, and it made pretty good sense in my mind. So I ordered a set of rear and front sights from Midway and replaced the factory rear sight. The rear sight is a Marbles "Bullseye" sight,

and the front sight is a HIVIZ Henry front sight,

(which I messed up and ordered the 22LR version which has a sight height difference, no good for me) and am now waiting on the correct front sight version to arrive.

Just having the factory front on and playing with the Marbles rear is a very large measurably better sight picture for me. I really prefer the peep sight on a rifle, whether ghost or true peep, for my purposes; and this really makes a difference in being able to pick up a target with this 22 Mag vs the factory rear sight. I can only imagine the final difference when the fiber optic front is installed and tested.


Anyone else have these two together, and do they work for you?

Well. I finally received the front HIVIZ front sight and was able to take it out for a real testing (not just playing around the house-which showed real promise for the sights) and found that the sight picture is different than the original (of course). There is more in the field around the target given the circle in the rear and the hood around the front. I tried both with the hood and without the hood on the front, and found that I slightly preferred the hood (even though it gave a bit more occlusion to the target field. This was chosen as for whatever reason, I found the fiber optic brighter with the hood than without it on.....I cannot explain this.

I must say that as a long time user of both peep and ghost ring sighting systems, I do enjoy the setup with these two sights on the Henry vs. the original "buckhorn" style rear. The fiber optic dot just "pops" for my eyes out on the front, and even though it seems a bit larger than the OEM black post on the front sight, I can make up for this by slowing down for precision a bit more out at 100+ yard shooting. The ease of seeing the front sight quicker, popping for me, and having that ease of sight pick up makes up for the (possible) negatives of the front sight. The rear sight, well the only possible negative I can find is that mayhaps a larger chance of getting knocked out of alignment/damaged due to a larger sight setting on top of the barrel, but I really don't see that happening without some serious mishandling of the little carbine. I know that things happen, but it is a well made sight, all steel, and looks to be able to take some knocks-just like any rear sight should be able to take.

For what it is worth, I can place a tube full tube of shots into the same pock mark on the rear 100 yard berm standing offhand with these sights. This feat is contingent on using the carbines' preferred ammo, as much or more than, the shooter. This rifle seems to be a bit picky with some kinds of 22 Mag ammunition.

All in all, I am very happy with the end product. It is worth the expense and time for me to improve my targeting abilities with this little carbine, as I very much enjoy playing around with it.

I don't think I need to tell you. But 22rfMag ammo is fussy in most rifles & from lot to lot of even the Same brand. I love that caliber in Cool little truck guns, but fussy about what you feed them. uncle mike

I know and agree with you on the finicky part. This is true with/amongst all the 22 rimfire ammunition I believe.

The good thing about this is that I don't try to "bench" this rifle to shoot little holes, but have fun with it....and that I really can do. It does most everything that I ask of it, and when it doesn't seem to be as accurate as I like, normally I can blame the shooter for misgivings on the "aim small, hit small" part!
