The idea of a "crushable" buffer (which is the secret behind Long Beards) has been discussed in here in relation to buckshot. I have pondered various stuff to use for a solid buffer which will disintegrate under pressure, but so far no bright ideas. Sugar, perhaps, could be used, but even though it would be environment-friendly it might end up as a caramel or hard candy slug!

That might not be bad? Sugar basted Turkey?

    Duplicate its performance? Yes.

If you are talking about a liquid buffer, some have used melted wax to do the same thing. The trick is having it brittle enough to break apart.

I tried Winchester Longbeard in two guns, neither was all that impressive. Turkey loads are one area where buffered handloads seem to rule.

The longbeard works great in my gun. Just wondering if anything new had came about, as far as reloading. I read one post on a different site, where he used fiberglass resin and hardener. He said that it turned to dust on ignition. Not sure how that works.

The longboard patterns awsome in my gun also. Better than anything else I've tried ( I refuse to try the crazy expensive TSS or heavy shot). Wrecked one on Sunday at probably 45 yards.

May I suggest the following load, from an old BPI turkey manual. The current turkey ranger wad, is now called the ranger elite.

    Federal 3" PB hull
    Federal 209A
    32 grains Bluedot
Turkey ranger wad + 20ga felt wad
    1 3/4 ounce lead
BPI buffer listed(I prefer PSB buffer)
    fold crimp

This load has out performed longbeard for me in any gun I've tried.

The Turkey Ranger had been discontinued. Any replacement suggestions? Do you mean BSB for buffer?

As I said, the ranger elite is the replacement. PSB buffer is sold by Precision Reloading. BPI buffer works too, just not as easy to work with.
