Uncle D’s Fury slug pressure test results

Got a couple dozen of these monster-looking slugs from Uncle D. Sent 5 lots off to be pressure tested. If anyone is interested, here are the results:

    All,

    1st load:

    Hull: 2.75” New primed Fiocchi
    Primer: Fiocchi
    Powder: Longshot
    Charge: 30 grs
    Gas seal: x12x
    Wad fillers: 3/8” fiber wad
    Fold crimp
    Avg velocity: 1401 FPS
    Avg pressure: 12,784 psi

NOTES: This load is slightly over pressure for 2.75” and 3” shotguns, but is well within the SAAMI specs for 3.5” 12 ga of 14,000 psi. Reduce charge by 1-3 grains if firing in a non-magnum shotgun.

    2nd load:

    Hull: 2.75” New primed Fiocchi
    Primer: Fiocchi
    Powder: 800X
    Charge: 35 grs
    Gas seal: x12x
    Wad fillers: 3/8” fiber wad
    Fold crimp
    Avg velocity: 1588 FPS
    Avg pressure: 18,790 psi

NOTES: This load is way over pressure. DO NOT DUPLICATE THIS LOAD. IT IS NOT SAFE. What the hell was I thinking when I came up with this?!

    3rd load:

    Hull: 3” New primed Cheddite
    Primer: Cheddite
    Powder: Steel
    Charge: 40 grs
    Gas seal: N/A
    Wad fillers: BP18 brush wad
    Fold crimp
    Avg velocity: 1457 FPS
    Avg pressure: 8586 psi

    4th load:

    Hull: 3” New primed Cheddite
    Primer: Cheddite
    Powder: Blue Dot
    Charge: 38 grs
    Gas seal: x12x
    Wad fillers: 3/8” fiber wad
    Fold crimp
    Avg velocity: 1402 FPS
    Avg pressure: 11,478 psi

    5th load:

    Hull: 2.75” New primed Fiocchi
    Primer: Fiocchi
    Powder: ProReach
    Charge: 25 grs
    Gas seal: x12x
    Wad fillers: 3/8” fiber wad
    Fold crimp
    Avg velocity: 1267 FPS
    Avg pressure: 10,622 psi

Next, I’ll hit the range up and check for accuracy.
The following loaded shells shows the difference between a regular folded hull and one finished with the Gaep finishing crimper:

Thank you for taking the time to do this, it is very helpful. The weight is comparable to a full bore round ball. My arm was feeling pretty bad by 36 grains of bluedot.

Was this Precision Reloading, or Tom Armbrust?

I reached out to Tom but he said he doesn’t pressure test anymore. He recommended Precision Reloading, so that’s what I went with.

I’m buying that Pressure Trace 2 unit. I figured it’ll pay for itself in less than a year.

That was Tom Roster who wont pressure test anymore I hope? I like Tom Armbrust, I'd hate to see him quit now. I own the Pressure Trace II system, it is great. A little tricky to get the strain gauge on perfect, but it works great after that. I see no reason at all to not trust it as much or more than published load data, as long as you use your head.

I'm surprised STEEL powder was so low pressure, yet such high velocity. I never gave the stuff much thought, but that sure looks promising.

Steel is like the calmer, stronger big brother to Blue Dot.

With that being said, I used the BP18 (same as BP12 from BPI) instead of fiber wads to build the slug column. I’m sure that helped pressure a lot.

    Leon,

I take it you will not be shooting targets with load#2?

800x at 28-29 grains would probably be a good one. You were in go big or go home mode at 35 grains.

Only live ones. On a different note, I killed two pigs this past weekend with one slug. Heart shot one the first passed through and head shot on the second one behind it. Slug was the Brenneke Super sabot.

Yeah, that’s where I should have started. Some reason, I had the hammerhead slug in mind and my pet load for that is 36 grs of 800X (although it’s lighter then these. )

If this one is accurate, you've got a monster on your hands!

Did I plan the shot? Nope. I was about 2 miles back in the particular unit (after putting almost 10 miles in on the main unit), and I really wasn’t expecting much.

Walking down this trail, I kept looking in the woods for pigs. Sometimes, you just walk up on them, just like I did this sounder.

They were about 60 yards in the brush and got down the the prone position on this small grassy mound right off the trail.

The only shot I had through the thicket was a sow that was facing me rooting around.

I settled the crosshairs on her forehead when another stepped in front of her perfectly broadside.

Put the crosshairs on her shoulder and fired. When I got back on the scope, I saw one doing the dirt dance. I noticed the base of the slug protruding from her forehead. I was baffled. I though maybe the slug hit a branch, came apart, and I just got lucky.

I was setting her up for pics when I looked to my right and noticed this ridiculous blood trail going in the brush.

Followed for 10 yards where the actual pig I shot first was. The slug blew her heart out, passed through, and smacked the one behind her dead in the head.

Since I was so far back, I did t bother getting my game cart. I just quartered them out and packed it all back to my truck.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize there was so much difference between Steel and Blue Dot. Blue Dot is unobtainable over here, not so with Steel.

I'm gonna try Steel behind my Brenneke slug. Turbo 1889 warned against using too little of the stuff so I'll start with 40 grains.

Two pigs in one shot! Had to be fun even if just lucky. Great preforming slug with real penetration. Good work Leon. Picked up a pound of Steel today. Seems to be five or six notches down the burn chart from Blue Dot. I'll try it under the 600gr. paradox slug. Gp

Is there a current US source for Gaep crimp finisher dies?
