I have had mine since 1964, when they cost about $65, new at KMart.
I haven't shot mine in recent years, but it's a perky little cartridge. Here is the Wikipedia link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.256_Winchester_Magnum

Congratulations on your great find...
They were available in all the above listed calibers but the .22 Jet and .357 are the hardest to find...
Back in the 1960s I was at the Lyman Blue Trail Range in Connecticut and met a guy who had one of each... .22 Jet, .357 Magnum and .256 Winchester. He said he had three sons and each would get one...
Saw only a couple of articles in gun magazines on the .22 Jet version. I bought one of the S&W 53s back in about 1974 and looked for either one of the Marlin lever guns or a H&R Topper which was also made in .22 Jet. In all these years of looking I have only seen two H&Rs and one Marlin for sale... The Marlin was only a couple of years ago...can't remember what it went for but I had lost my interest in Jets so I passed...
Had one of the 57Ms in .22 Magnum and with the standard original Winchester 40 grain HPs would shoot 1/2" groups at 50 yards...but in the modern 30-33 grain ammo and it would open up to 2"...
Great guns from the past....
