    m1 30 carbine

    Hi
I recently inquired a M1 30 carbine I shot a couple times it's a nice little blinker now I'm thinking about doing some reloading for it
I reloading handgun loads no rifles I know what bullet I want to use I just don't know the powers I use Winchester and Hodgdon powder
for my handguns I'm not looking for load data I just want to see what other people are using I think I will be using Winchester 296 powder

Bullet Berry's 110 gr Round nose
    primers Federal small rifle
    press xl650

    Thanks
    Joe R

H-110 is a good powder, almost standard; but 296 is also a good choice as is 2400.

I use W296, H110, IMR4227 and N110. All of them work very well in the M1 Carbine.

With the Berry bullet I would look at 2400 and 4227 starting loads or perhaps the Lyman 5.5 - 6.5 gr Unique loads.

2400 and 4227 are my go-tos for carbine.

I've gotten excellent function and accuracy with a 130 grain lead bullet and 11 grains of 2400. It's all I load anymore for my carbine.

That 130 gr plain base is an excellent bullet for the carbine. I use it for most of my cast carbine loads.

Would you mind naming that mold for me. Sounds interesting. Harles

Lee C309113f is all I need for cast in the .30 Carbine. I will admit to using some j-words too.

My results with the Berrys bullet were not good. I tried a couple powders in two different rifles and had tumbling bullets at 100yards with mediocre accuracy. The 311-359 was a bit better and worked okay for plinking, but takes the additional step of using gas checks. I started developing loads with the 311-410 but fell into a screaming deal on some 110gr FMJs. I got them in bulk, they work well and will keep me in the M1 carbine game for many years to come.

Back in '68 I started casting for the 30 Carbine. Started with the 311410, a plain based bullet that weighed 125 - 130 gr depending on alloy. Tried COWWs and linotype back then. Couldn't get better than poor accuracy back then with 2400, 4227, H110 and AL8. If I backed off I got minute of ball ammo accuracy at 50 yards. It was a frustrating experience because with 100 gr half jackets and 110 Speer and Sierra RNSPs I could get 15 shot 2 - 3" groups at 100 yards. Lyman and all the experts claimed 311410 was "THE" cast bullet for the 30 Carbine...….

Then a friend loaned me a 311359 mould, I cast a couple hundred up (lots of fun with a single cavity mould but I didn't know any better then....) of COWWs, sized at .309, lubed with Javelina and GC'd with Hornady GCs. Loaded over any of those powders I was getting 2 - 2 moa groups at 100 yards with top end manual loads. Sold the 311410 mould, bought a 311359 double cavity mould (man was I castin bullets then!) and never looked back at another PB'd cast bullet for the 30 Carbine again.

I have since tried numerous other cast bullets of 105 - 120 gr and they all shot quite well, always better at 100 yards than the 311410 ever did at 50 yards. In the early '70s when I got my first Oehler chronograph I chronographed the 311410 load that shot the best as I had kept a couple hundred of those bullets for some reason. The velocity was 1500 fps +/- which is about what we know is usually the max velocity for real accuracy with PB cast bullets. My 311359 load with H110 runs 1870 fps. The 313631 105 gr GC'd SWC runs 1950 fps.

If plinking and "blastin" is all that's wanted out of the M1 carbine then I guess that's okay. However, it was not what I wanted. I wanted a cast load that shot as good, or almost, as jacketed bullets at full 30 carbine velocity. That has always been a much more useful load to me and the sights can be zeroed and regulated so effective shooting can be done to 300 yards with the M1 carbine. Thus I never thought, again, that GCing the cast bullets was a bother.....rather to me it was essential.

I suggest you try some of those 311359s with GCs on them with 4227 or H110. Might surprise you how well your M1 carbine can really shoot.

I cast up a bunch of boolits from a mold I borrowed from Dad several years ago. Only recently got them powder coated. He loved it for the carbine, it was almost a spittin' image of the ball ammo profile, 115 grain, FB. I look forward to trying it. He always cast them super hard, I think pure lino, mine are mostly COWW, he was worried about the gas system.

    This is the one.

I've shot cast in more than 20 different carbines. I've used straight COWWs to hard alloys. Only one carbine caused any problems with cast and I believe it must have had a burr on the gas port. I never experienced any gas cylinder leading with any of the other carbines and that included an M2.
Larry, I'm surprised that you had disappointing results with the 311410. All of my carbines have been able to hold 4 inch or less at 100 yards with that bullet.

Yes, I could get that level of "accuracy" too.....down around 1400 - 1600 fps. That did not regulate to the sights and was a very poor rabbit/coyote killer. However, the 311359 at 1870 fps did regulate to the sights and when zeroed the sight setting could be used out to the max 300 yard setting. Accuracy was, as mentioned a lot better than I ever got with the 311410. But, like the 311410, the 311359 was also a poor killer on rabbits and coyote's. That's what led be to the 311316 (GC'd version of the 32-20 bullet, the 311008) and the 313631 GC'd 105 gr SWC for the 32 H&R Magnum. Both, when loaded to 30 Carbine velocity level regulate to the sight ranges and are deadly on rabbits and coyote's, especially when HP'd.

I use the 311259 quite a bit, but I think my all time favorite 30M1 boolit is the RCBS 30-115-SP. My favorite powder is VV N110, although a little pricey it sure works well in the M1 Carbine.

I use 2400 and Lil’Gun with very good results. I’ve used cast (Noe 311008, 314-115 swc, Arsenal RanchDog 313-115-rf), Rainier plated and jacketed all with good accuracy and function. In my particular m1 the Speer half-jackets seem to be more accurate with 2400 than Lil’Gun.

For years IMR 4227, H110 when they started having grain size issues with 4227.
