    Newbie

Hello everyone. New to the forum and saying hi. I'm in Ontario Canada and will probably be the only BP shooter within 500 miles of me. My Shiloh Sharps 50-90 is arriving in the mail today so I'm very excited. The previous owner sent me some PP bullets he made with his KAL adjustable mould and they look like torpedoes. 777 grains and 1.6 inches long. The twist is 22-24 range so these should be in the ball park.
I also have a Miroku 1885 in 45-90, a Sharps 1863 carbine in 50-70 and a Modelo Argentino RB in 43 Spanish. Not to mention a rather ticked off wife. Will probably pp for all of them in time. First time with black powder so you can expect lots of questions down the road because I know wise men dwell here.
    Happy and safe shooting folks.
    Bill

Welcome to the addiction. Paper Patching can be very rewarding when you get it all right. For the shiloh with the previous owners data, get with him and get his data and how he did it for the rifle. This gives a known starting place. Paper, lubes, wrapping tech all have an effect.

For what use do have in mind target, hunting....? Ranges?

I paper patch for several rifles ( no 50 cals though). I do currently patch for several 45-70s a 45-90, a 40-65, and have started working with a 38-55. Mine are bore riders. I do use a grease cookie between wads. My 45 cal bullets are .442 dia cast ( Brookes mould) and .450 wrapped with 2 wraps of Seth Cole paper. These are only seated around .180" into the case and a light fit into the bore.

Pick up a copy of Wrights book Loading and shooting the paper patched bullet a beginners guide its full of good information

I have his recipe and I plan to reverse engineer his wrapping technique and see what happens. I would like to go a little shorter on the bullet say 1.45 as I have read here. Length being more important than weight. I visited the Shiloh shop in 2015 and was smitten on sight. I'll mostly shoot targets as getting an adult moose tag is very hard in this area, however deer are plentiful so we'll see. Funny enough there's a herd of buffalo not a mile from me right in town. Sure appreciate all the excellent advice on this forum. I picked up some pads of airmail type paper from Staples. I think it runs around 1.5 or 2 thou for thickness. Got some goodies from Buffalo Arms. Let the fun begin

Thank you. I'll try to get some up soon as I unpack my camera. We just moved back here a week ago so lot's of boxes to unpack yet.

I’ve certainly learned a lot watching and asking questions. Looking forward to seeing your questions.
