New experiment - Cast boolits in 243 and 270

Thanks to a deceased estate I was given some moulds and gas checks last Saturday. About 5000 gas checks in lots of cals in 6mm, 25, 27, 7mm, 8mm and 44 pistol. Two Ideal moulds in .243" and two in .277" together with .245" and .278" lube sizer dies.

My 270 is a Savage chambering (250/3000 necked up) which should be interesting. 6mm is a Remington 700 in 243.

been shooting the Lee 277-135RF in 270 sized 280. Ive collected the Lyman molds and they were ok, Lee shot better. Just got around to casting and loading up the RCBS 150 grain mold with 10 grains of Red Dot. Ill report back Monday evening with a range report, albeit only at 25 yards. But lets be realistic, we are shooting 22lr velocities. Quarter sized groups can be around 1 or 2 inches at 100. The Lee boolit does around 2 inches at 100 for me. Loaded with 34 grains of 748, accuracy is the same with tame recoil.

Start the 6mm ideal molds with about 12 gr 2400 in the 243. You should be able to work up or down a grain to settle it in.

Sounds as if you're in for a lot of fun!! I've not worked with a 270 with cast bullets but the 7 X 64 Brenneke I have was fairly easy to come up with a good load. Straight from the RCBS cast bullet book I started at 25 grs. of Reloder 7 and an open cell foam filler. I don't believe I could improve on that load. Might check to see if nthey have a similar 270 load. Ahhh...but you said 270 Savage. That should be a really fun one to work up.

I shoot a RCBS 270-150 boolit out of my .270 Max. BF pistol. It shoots so well that I have never considered another mold for the gun.

I shot up a coffee can of cast bullets in a .270 that an old friend of my fathers had cast and dad got when he passed. They shot OK, but not great. They were cast too hard and sized too small, I think. I've since picked up a mold and cast some, gonna give them a try eventually. I did find a .280 sizer die I plan to use.

I also have the Lyman 85 grain 6mm mold I intend to try in my 6mm Remington 788 eventually.

Cast in 7mm was easier than I would have thought. Can't see where this will be much different.

Ok, I like the RCBS 270-150. It was giving quarter sized groups at 25 yards. It cast super easy. Its gonna be a keeper.

Finally had some time to cast some boolits. My 270 is a Savage chambering (rather than the Winchester 270) and being a much smaller cartridge lends itself to mild loads. The Ideal boolit is 123Gns and sized to 0.278". Looking forward to some range time today but it rained steadily
