    Winchester 94AE 44mag 24 in barrel questions

    I ran across one of these today and decided I wanted it more than a Contender I had. I think I paid too much for the 94AE but this is the only one like I've seen. I was really looking for something in .357 when I ran across this one. I figure the action will run fine with low powered reloads.. (-:}

    Anyone down loading (44 special level) for one of these rifles? I have a few moulds and dies for 44 so should be pretty easy to load for. Have moulds 429434 (gas checked), 429421 and RCBS 429-240-SWC. Lots of Blue Dot and Unique.

    Scope blocks will be gone in the morning...

    I have the carbine version and use light loads in it.....44 Mag & .44 Spl. using Unique powder. Have used the 429421 & the RCBS 240 SWC. Never heard of a 429434 Lyman mold.

    429434 I think was made for the 44-40.. SO I guess it feeds 44 specials Ok then. I have a lots of 44 special brass, not so much 44 mag. If it shoots specials, that would be a win for me.

    That’s a dandy, with the pistol grip, half mag, and checkered stock.

    That's a nice looking rifle, arlon. 6grs of Unique under a Lee TL430240gr SWC in Special brass ran through a Rossi .44 that I had better than anything else. I know yours is s 94, but maybe give it a try.

    If it shoots half as well as it looks I'll be in good shape. I like the longer barrels so I can see the front sight clearly. My eyes are fine on long barrels but not so good on carbines. Pulled the scope blocks off, need to find plugs for the holes. I think this will stay iron sighted as as I can see the front sight.

    I have a Winnie Trapper AE that loves 8.3g of Green Dot behind an MP 432-256HP (H&G 503 clone). Velocity is 1175fps with an SD of 9. OAL is 1.700 and primer is WLP.

    One surprise with this rifle.. I just measured the twist rate and it's 1:20. Way better than I expected for a 44. I was expecting about half that twist rate. It shouldn't have any issues with anything I throw down it. Also has a lot of rather deep cut rifling. All things considered I think I'll try loading this with the 429434 first. That bullet was designed to feed in a lever action. It seems like the shoulder on SWC bullets wouldn't be the best for feeding. Will see.

    I did find a pretty neat peep sight made by Skinner just for the 94AE. Little pricy but it sure would make it easier for me to shoot!

    Certainly don't think so. It's all correctly roll stamped. I just think they did at least one thing right with these and abandoned the 1:38 or so most 44 mags seem to have.

    Lyman #429434 is a Gas Check mold, it also feed feeds very well in lever guns.

    Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook #1 recommends starting with 7.0grs of Unique in .44Spl cases.

    Was initially designed for .44-40

    Get a set of XS sights and 9 grains of Unique is great. I have the same rifle but with the full length mag tube.
    21.5 gr of H110 and a 270gr cast is my favorite hunting load

    My .44 mag Rossi 92 does well with 8 - 10 grains of Unique and Lasercast 240 grain SWCs. Same powder charge and a 200 grain RNFP bullet makes for a great light-recoiling plinking round.
