I had two at one time. Springfield armory that came back from Korea Blue Sky on the bbl. Dealer had bought 250 of them and it looked like mice going through the boxes. Stock wasn;t the best but barrel was in VG to EXC condition and came with a Rem NM op rod. The H&R had led a rough life, barrel looked like 10 miles of bad roads. Wouldn't shoot the 150's for beans, Ap almost shot as well as match ammo. That one went down the road. Still have the Blue Sky barrel is a little more worn now though. Replaced the wood when midway had a sale for all the wood for $120 some years back. Last time I shot it some of the young shooters have never seen one. No problem getting someone who wanted to shoot one. I loaded the 8 round en block in the rifle showing which parts are used to load the clip into the rifle (M1 thumb don't you know) Told them very painful if the bolt slammed into your thumb smashes your thumb. The one that surprised me was the girl friend of one of the shooters. Picked the rifle up loaded the clip and hit the op rod handle like she'd been doing it all her life. Shot pretty well as well. Told me her dad was a retired marine and he had one. I told her it's time for her to get one of her own. Frank

I got mine in the mid 90's from the DCM.. IHC with LMR barrel, correct stock with date code in channel and IHC OP rod. Still have it to this day plus a nice early war SA with lockbar sights to keep the IHC company in the safe.

The pitting will probably be barely noticeable above the woodline. The ones that I have purchased with new wood and a new barrel shot exceedingly well, sometimes better than Match conditioned guns. Caution: the rifle's trigger guard will be really tight, as will be the wood on the receiver: this is a good thing. The more you take the barreled receiver out of the stock, the more wear you put on the camming pins in the trigger guard, and on the wood. Take it apart once, then leave it alone until you need to change the Op Rod Spring.

The place for info on the Garand was the old Culver's Shooting Page, which shut down, then revived:

Another place which has a lot of Garand info is this forum:

Unless you are a stand hunter a M1 is miserable to drag around the woods. I did it once when I was a teen in eastern WVa mountains. That cured me and I was only 15 or 16 at the time.

I took out my 1903a4 once, wasn't so bad. I'm not all that adverse to the weight to be able to hunt with such a classic rifle. But then again. Michigan is very flat. Easy terrain unless you are in a cedar swamp

    Good afternoon Dimner
Bought our CMP Springfield some years ago. It was all it was advertised to be and actually more. We have no regrets investing in that rifle.

I got to CMP Special same as you. It is a beautiful piece of machinery! If you use the adjustable gas plug, you will be able to shoot about all factory ammo, with proper adjustment. But you wont be able to participate in "as issued" matches. You will have to shoot in the "unlimited" class.

I left mine "as issued", but I reload to specs. I did shoot some of the Winchester M1 Garand tribute ammo through it, but its made to the M1 pressure curve specs.

It is a good shooter. Only competed twice so far but I shot 264-0X at Camp Perry, and a 264-2x at a local match with it. At least I'm consistent!
