I guess it was not much of a surprise, but I was surprised the shotgun did not blow to pieces due to the barrel being full of mud.

I liked the video - I kept hoping the guy would shoot it from his shoulder! Then again, my wife says I have a warped sense of humor. LOL

Makes me want to go out & buy a Hatfield SS rifle. I don't know the pressure spec of .50 BMG but it probably is around 60K in a normal rifle. Shooting a .50 cal bullet down a .70 cal barrel would drop the pressure way down. What was impressive is that a barrel full of mud didn't bulge & back-pressure around the case didn't damage the breech & mechanism.

No, I didn't subscribe to the YouTube, but I'm still smiling about that idiot...

Holy crap, 50 BMG brass shot shell! I would repeat several times "do not try this at home". At least they did not try to shoulder fire it.

I was disapointed he didn't fire it from his shoulder or at least not buried in the dirt. And did you notice at the start when he's firing the shotshell that he was shooting at the power line overhead? IDIOT.

    Surprised me too.
Watching the ground heave up.... the dirt/mud must be loose and porous enough for it to vent, and the SP FMJ bullet to slip through.
If the barrel was truly restricted, the result might have been different.

I didn't watch it through to the end. What was the final surprise?

He figured out how to fire form .50BMG cases into (about) .70-220 brass, and didn't destroy the shotgun.

Friend of mine bought a Hatfield Semi and it's actually a pretty decent shotgun. I'd have no problem buying one for the WalMart price he paid.

Had to be the expanding hot gas dislodged the dirt in the end of the barrel, due to inertia of the bullet (micro-seconds to get it moving vs. gas expanding explosively and instantaneously). The bullet's inappropriate diameter was too small to engage the interior walls of the barrel or "obturate" to seal the bore (a cast boolit term we understand - if that term is even applicable to jacketed bullets).
If it was easy, anybody could do it.

I hope he didn’t wash the mud off and sell it to someone as a “used” shotgun- but that would follow suit, I’m afraid.

Even fired from the shoulder , there wouldn't be a catastrophic failure unless the bbl was completely blocked with mud up to the shoulder of the brass. There would've been a better chance of failure if he had used a 12 guage shell and blocked the muzzle because of the more appropriate burn rate of the powder and sealing of the bore with the wad column/mud pack.

I was watching it jump up out of the ground, and figure that showed what would be the felt recoil.
You'd be crazier than a ex-wife to shoulder fire it, but it didn't looke like it'd be any big deal.

Was done about 15 years ago on Mythbusters...who found it was near impossible to blow a modern shotgun barrel, and they even had trouble doing any damage to an old Remington damascus barrel.......hard to top their cannonball trick, tho.
