7.62x39 Rimmed

I like the looks of the long version and think it would be better for a rifle length barrel.

I remember reading an article by Bob Milek, probably in the 1980's, where he stated that if the 7.62x39 had been easily available that he and Steve Herrett would never have modified the .30-30 case in the first place.

The longer one does look good, but can you keep the base dimensions close to what you need? A lot of taper in a short distance with that case.

Would not the tapered case of the 7.62x39, whether it had a rim or not, produce more bolt thrust than a lesser tapered case?
Could 'improving' the case help it grip the chamber wall better with less back thrust and provide higher velocities with the same pressure?

already have the 40-65 on this action so hypothetically would guess at 35000 area would not be a problem and should actually less .

I've thought about using .357 Maximum cartridges to form rimmed 300 blackout cases. I think that would be a really cool lever gun cartridge.

Interesting idea. Would certainly be an easy job, just neck it down and trim. Personally I'd try to make it longer, since the BO is so notoriously short of powder space. Otherwise it won't be a medium game cartridge in a lever gun, because to get 1000 ft.lbs. the BO has to be run at pressures too high for most lever actions.

did the 300 BO on the 360 DW case in Jan on a small martini ,shoots quite nice with 150 gr and 110 .Just a bit more case capacity than the badger

Did a 30 on the Super mag case years ago, to shoot in IHMSA. Had a 30-30 length neck as I had planned on using boolits with it.

You need some taper to ease extraction a truly straight walled case will drag the full length. On an action that "pops" the case out it may only kick it out a little bit meaning it will need to be pulled out by had and on most single shots this is a tight area, especially with a scope over top of the action.

Even the new round have a small amount of body taper from base to shoulder

??? The venerable .22 rimfire is as straight as straight can be, although chambers usually have a thou taper to them. Ditto most rimmed pistol cartridges. Now that I think of it, my old Stevens .25-21 is a very long straight cartridge. No trouble extracting that. Brass springback leaves the case a thou or two smaller than the chamber, unless you've grossly exceeded a safe load.
