Today's trip to the scrap yard

I cashed in some range pickup brass at an undisclosed West Texas scrap yard today. As usual I asked if I could look at their lead. The 55 gallon drum was full of wheel weights. Looking at the surface I didn't see a good ratio of lead. Scraped the surface for better look, decided today wasn't the day for a good yield. Gave the surface another scrape and saw.....canvas. DUG into the surface and found three factory sealed bags of hard lead shot. Dropped them into a bucket, weighed out and paid the man 75¢ / lb. I don't reload shotgun so I will be adding the shot to harden my soft lead.

I got a couple hundred pounds of shot like that back when you could buy Lead out of the scrap yard for 25 cents a pound.

I made a few ingots, then started just dumping it in the pot as I went along.
Ya gotta stir it real well, but it goes on in.

Another option is sell it for its real value, and put the proceeds in the 'Whiskey and Gunpowder' fund.

Repeating again, here in Wisconsin the scrapers/recyclers will not sell lead to the general public as it's been listed as a hazardous material.

If I found that much bagged shot for that price I think I would give shotgun reloading a try. Nice score.

If I found bagged lead shot at fire sale prices, it would get swapped off to some of my friends who shoot flying pottery. It’s always good to keep other guys at the club thinking what a great guy you are, and that amount of new shot is a lot more valuable in the general shooters’ market than its scrap value. Scrap shot? I’ve bought several hundred ponds of it from a turkey shoot operation, and what didn’t get resold is definitely destined for the smelting pot.

My old Promelt was a trade for a few bucks and bags of shot to a shot gunning friend. The shot I got for a dollar a pound from a former caster who wanted his stock to go to another caster (his asking price). Satisfactory deal all around.

So, yes, factory shot is good for reloading, good for casting, and good for trading.
