Powder for 357 Max with 180 - 200 gr bullets

Been reading up getting ready to make the jump into a new to me caliber & rifle . Rifle is a T/C Encore 20" 1 in 16" MGM barrel . According to the numbers my best choices appear to be W296 / H110 , 4227 , Lil Gun , 300MP , VVN-120 , Acc 1680 . Faster such as 2400 , VVN-110 & RS Enforcer probably won't give best velocities without hitting the pressure wall first . Slower like RL 7 & 4198 pretty sure won't get me there either . I can see my Oehler's gonna come in handy . Lucked into 1K each Rem new cases & 180 SJHP for a good price . I already cast the LBT 180 WFNGC which I'm hoping will work out well . I might also get some 358627GC to try . My hopes are cast with an extruded powder ( throat life ) will give me acceptibly accurate with good velocity . Jacketed selection in this size is for the most part too soft ( explosive @ Max speeds ) or too hard ( 35 Rem speed needed ) . For deer they'd probably work just fine , but I primarily hunt hogs . Pass through with blood trail & ability to take out shoulders are what I want . If any want to post data just give a starting load to work from & I can go from there .

I recall I'M 4227 was the powder for 357max. Been almost 30 year since I was loading it. 300MP would be interesting g to play with in that cartridge.

a1680 with the old 180 Hornady Spire points gave best velocity and accuracy in my handi-rifle reamed to 357 max.
Call Accurate and they will give you data appropriate to your gun.

I've been shooting the Max in a Low Wall and an Encore (MGM bbl) for five years now and I have three full pages of bullet/powder ammo tried in both guns. You'll get best results with Rel7, 4227, and 1680 for accuracy and velocity.

I find AA1680 to be THE powder for the 357 Max. I have very accurate jacketed loads (26-29gr) and accurate cast loads (23-25gr). As always start lower and work into those weight ranges using SR primers and you'll find a good load. I shot a bear this year with an Accurate 36-270 LFP flying at 1755fps. It put a wallop on that bear!

    Thanks, Dinny

I agree I rarely load ankther powder in my Maxi rifles since discovering AA1680 some twenty years ago.

Many can work RL7 is a favorite powder but it never did anything for me in the Maxi.

4227 is a good choice and has worked pretty well.

One of my best kids for the 358627 bullet came with 2015 powder!! I didn’t get the top velocity but accuracy was great! That Maxi has a very deep throat and allowed bullet seating out of the case quite a ways.

H110 seemed to do well for me in the 357 Max, just a tad fast.
I wonder how the Surplus 297 would work since it is listed as slower than 296?

VV-N110 works good for me in a 16" barrel, 180-230gr bullets. Yes, it is a bit fast.
