Updated range report on Nickel 27-2

Well, Its been just about a month with the new girl. I'm talking to my nicket 27-2 8 3/8ths that I picked up on new years eve.

After doing a bit of trigger spring work, the SA pull is now just a whisker under 3#. I put a set of reworked targets on her too, which fit by hand better than anything else. Here's a picture of them, although not on the 27-2






All my shooting is 1 hand NRA Bullseye style. Due to the weather i'm mostly shooting on the 50 foot indoor range. My best effort to date was this target. Oh ignore the .22 holes, I recycle targets! Dang it, i ALWAYS manage to yank 1 shot. Getting all 10 in the black is a rare accomplishment for this old guy.



Now I just need to wait till Spring to see what we can do outdoors at 50 yards

Those 8 3/8" nickel model 27-2's are very nice revolvers. Used mine many years ago to take my Mountain Lion using the Keith bullet.

My load is the classic 148 grain wadcutter, and 2.8 grains of Bullseye.

96x2 at 50 feet, timed fire is very nice. Not many can thumb cock a Smith anymore...but aside...I'd opine that you need 3k right windage or a POA change to center 'em up....Just messin' with ya...that's a fine target. Leading issues? Would be greatly appreciated by me and my 27-2 five incher. Thx in advance, Rod
BTW, 4.0 of Bullseye with Lyman's 35891/145 gr WC/0.358" in Magnum brass does better for me than the fabled & long established 2.8 load, plus, I don't have to scrape out that pesky gunk from .38 Spl's at the throat taper! YMMv...

No leading issues at all.

Oh to be 100% honest, that IS a recycled .22 RF timed fire target, but I shot the .38 group slowfire!

I too have a Nickel 27-2, it's a 5 inch. Bought it some 30yrs ago, a former Florida Highway Patrol Revolver. It came with a set of Pachmayr Grips though. It came with an action smooth as glass, 3lbs on single action, 11lbs on double action.
I've put more 1,000's of the #358156GC over max 2400 through it then I can count. Accurate as the day is long. Easy to clean too, the carbon shows up well on the Nickle surfaces.

Just love this Revolver, it sits so well in the Hand.

All I did was replace the trigger return spring with a lighter one, I can't remember which one. Either 15# or perhaps 14#. I'm not home, so I can't check. I also take about 1/4 turn off of the strain screw, maybe slightly more but NEVER more than 1/2 turn. I test fire and if all is OK I actually shorten the screw the corresponding amount, so it can be cinched down tight. I have always preferred doing that with a stock S&W mainspring to any of the Wolf, etc. aftermarket springs. Even the ones listed as "magnum" or "duty action" were never 100% reliable for me. BUT, you really can't overdo it with backing off that strain screw. I always found that was enough. Trigger control is the key to accurate DA shooting, not ultra light spring weights, IMO.

Patrick, that is what a gun is suppose to look and shoot like. I was in my LGS today and they had a new 27 blue in the case. No comparison--none. The finish is not even close to the old stuff. Guy behind the counter asked if I would like to look at it and I politely told him no thanks, I've seen enough.
